CATHERINE RIBEIRO + ALPES "PAIX" 1972 PHILIPS ORIG FRENCH PRESS.
HAVING COMING TO THIS WITH NO PRE-CONCEIVED NOTIONS WAHTEVER (BEYOND THE COVER & INFO GLEANED RE; LINE-UP, INSTRUMENTATION, ETC) I MUST SAY, I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THIS LP. 'C.B.' IS THE VOCALIST / LYRICIST & IS OBVIOUSLY INFLUENECED BY FRENCH CHANSON, MAYBE LIKE A FEMALE JAQUES BREL BUT HIPPER, LIKE A MORE STRIDENT 'NICO'. THE LP, DOMINATED BY TWO LONG TRACKS (ONE OF THEM TAKING UP ALL OF A SIDE) REALLY GIVES THIS GREAT BAND, 'ALPES', ROOM TO STRETCH-OUT & DEVELOP - ORGAN, IN THE TRADITION OF, SAY, 'SAUCER OF SECRETS' "PINK FLOYD" SETS THE TONE, WITH KILLER BASS LINES & INTERESTING GUITAR WORK. RHYTHM IS SUPPLIED AN UNCONVENTIONAL SOUNDING DRUM (NOT A DRUM KIT) & VARIOUS PERCUSSION
HERE IS ONE REVIEW I FOUND;
This album is difficult to pin down (as my many different tags indicate) but in a word, it is "mind-expanding" almost to the point of being mind-blowing. It is a trip for sure, to where I don´t know. I have only listened to it twice so I won´t spend much words right now but if you are interested in progressive music that stays way off the usual path of technical wizardry and adheres instead to a punk-attitude of shouting, intense vocalizations, pulsating drum loops and natural echoes, this is your album. Sounds like Nico (if she ever had a proper voice) shouting her guts out to a bewildering vortex of natural forces. You could also imagine a punk band, say, the Stooges, drenched in the soundscape of early Pink Floyd (Saucerful of Secrets) and the Beatles´ most extreme psychedelia (Tomorrow Never Knows). It is that wonderful. Awesome, in fact, and quite addictive too.
NOT SURE I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH SOME HIS COMPARISIONS - BUT YOU GET THE IDEA!!
THE PLAYERS; CATHERINE RIBEIRO vox,lyrics; PATRICE MOULLET cosmophone,acoustic guitar; JEAN-SEBASTIEN LEMOINE organ; MICHEL SANTANGELLI percussion.
THE TRACKS; ROC ALPIN; JUSQU'A CE QUE LA FORCE DE T'AIMER ME MANQUE; PAIX; UN JOUR....LA MORT.
THIS ORIGINAL FRENCH PRESSING IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE GATEFOLD HAS SMALL SPLIT (2") IN THE SPINE, OTHERWISE FINE. THE VINYL (BLACK LABEL PHILIPS) HAS SOME LIGHT SURFACE SCUFF ONLY & PLAYS EXCELLENTLY - EXCEPT FOR A SMALL MARK ON SIDE TWO WHICH CLICKS FOR A FEW REVOLUTIONS ONLY - NO STICKS OR JUMPS). GENERALLY LOOKS & PLAYS GREAT.
