From 1958 comes a hard-rocking, wild Carl Perkins album, that many people have heard of but not actually heard.  It's an album of rock-and-roll standards, all covers, recorded over the course of two nights for Columbia Records.  He had left the Sun label earlier in the year, and one gets the impression that Sun wanted him to play more country-oriented things, because nothing on that label rocks quite as hard as this album.

The speed of activity in putting this album together, combined with Perkins' already budding alcohol problem, made for some interesting mutations of the songs on the album.  "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" features a line about a cat "peepin' in a seafood door," and "believing to the devil, you're the devil and now I know."  "Sittin' On Top of the World," the blues standard, had never been done in quite this manner--breakneck speed, pounding bass and drums, with Carl really screaming the lyrics.  Absolutely amazing.

According to rumour, this album was supposed to replicate Perkins' stage show.  If his show was as wild as this album, it had to be something to be seen.  He continues to rock through a couple of Little Richard songs, a couple of Elvis songs, a Ray Charles song, another Little Richard song, throwing a Hank Williams song and an obscure rockabilly cover before he's through.

The sad truth is that Carl Perkins would not rock quite as hard again for some time.  Over the next few years he released only a handful of singles on Columbia, some of them definitely country-western, some of them decent rockabilly.  The 60s were a series of ups and downs for him, as his career took a nose-dive.  So when you hear this album, he's rocking here as if he'd never be able to ever again.  And if you do get a chance to listen, you will probably want to own your own copy afterward.  It's a really addictive album.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam.

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
