CARAVAN were the other half of the WILDE FLOWERS - the SOFT MACHINE being the other - that originated in Canterbury, Kent. The band itself was originally formed in early 1968 by guitarist/vocalist Pye HASTINGS, keyboardist Dave SINCLAIR, bassist/vocalist Richard SINCLAIR (later of HATFIELD & THE NORTH, NATIONAL HEALTH, etc.), and drummer Richard COUGHLAN. All four members of CARAVAN were, at one time or another, in that band. They were a leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound".
Waterloo Lily is Caravan's most overlooked release from their golden age, and is one of their best albums. This album came after David Sinclair's departure, and Steve Miller fills in on Keyboards. Caravan moves in a more straightforward jazz-rock direction on this album, compared to the whimsical Canterbury of past releases. However, there is enough great compositions and humour to justify the Caravan name. This album also shows just how well Caravan was able to balance relatively simple pop tunes with complex prog workouts in harmony. It has all of Caravan's past musical features, such as Pye Hastings fluid (but subdued) guitar work, jazzy piano, complex bass lines and a high degree of improvisation. It is also this album where Pye Hastings first assumes his role as band leader, and does it in dramatic fashion with several excellent compositions.
By the time this fourth Caravan album was released the group were deservedly highly acclaimed and had a considerable following. Founder members of the ‘Canterbury Scene’ they had already made their mark during the late sixties psychedelic era with their self titled debut album continuing with the jazzier ‘If I Could…..’ in 1970 in a similar genre to their contemporaries Soft Machine. ‘In The Land Of Grey And Pink’ is regarded by many as their best album and it is certainly deserving of high praise. To some extent it created an expectation and overshadowed Waterloo Lily - Steve Miller joined the group, a more jazz based influence came to the fore and the followers were not convinced. I personally think that it is a great album, alongside the best, and history may read it that way. It is often the case that albums that were not the most popular on first release are later recognised as real classics. This is a fantastic example with FIRST MATRICES & STAMPERS, most likely to be ONE OF THE VERY EARLIEST FIRST PRESSINGS. This represents a RARE OPPORTUNITY to buy a near MINT EXAMPLE of a VERY SCARCE GREAT ALBUM.
This album is highly recommended to any CARAVAN collector / fan or anyone interested in the 'Canterbury' music scene of the early 70's.
On offer here is a stunning ORIGINAL UK DERAM BROWN LABEL 1ST PRESS LP of CARAVAN'S fourth album 'WATERLOO LILY'.

THIS IS A BRILLIANT DERAM HEAVY VINYL LP WHICH PLAYS SUPERBLY AND DELIVERS AUDIO TO AN EXCELLENT STANDARD THROUGHOUT - BRIGHT, CLEAR, FULL BODIED AND POSITIVE.
(This original 1972 UK Deram label first pressing still retains its full gloss and sheen with beautiful surfaces, it has that 'just pressed' look and judging by the labels and lack of spindle marks it has been looked after and cared for extremely well. Under strong light you can only just see a few faint wispy hairlines. Nothing serious and nothing to affect the playing in any way at all. Play tested today with AWESOME powerful sound quality. The disc plays superbly all the way through on both sides. Sharp and clear loud sound, with only very minor and light sporadic audible crackle, no skips, no jumps, no sticking, no serious loud pops or clicks that are noticeable. The vinyl has an incredible stereo reproduction with fantastic near perfect sound quality. A great original UK 1st pressing of this rare progressive rock LP. I doubt if you can find a significantly better condition original copy than this one!)
Labels: EX+
(Original very first pressing Deram Brown & White 'Crescent' labels are very clean except for a small circular stamp on side two (please see pictures) and in pristine condition. On close inspection of the centre spindle hole I can see a few almost invisible and very faint spindle traces. This album has been played very few times during its near 40 years of existence)
Gatefold Sleeve: EX+ near MINT-
'Sleeve Printed in England by Robert Stace'
Beautiful Thick Matt Gatefold Sleeve With Iconic Centre Spread!
(A somewhat spectacular and eye-catching thick matt unlaminated gatefold cover, 'Printed in England by Robert Stace', which is in stunning EX+ near MINT- condition. The front and back are wonderful, having only a few very light wrinkle creases near the spine and edges, one almost unoticeable very faint tiny little else to fault and our Lily will seldom be seen looking bettersticker mark, and no serious wear or rubbing whatsoever. All the seams and spine are excellent with hardly any shelfwear to speak of at all, spine text is all fully legible. The opening edges are sharp and straight. Opening the gatefold reveals a centre spread - one of my favourites - little to fault and our Lily will seldom be seen looking better! The original 'Made In England' Decca Blue and White polylined inner sleeve is present and is in excellent condition. A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s gatefold cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors. Lily is a real beauty indeed!)

On offer here, from my own collection, is a SUPERB virtually MINT condition original 1972 UK 1st PRESS LP of the great CARAVAN album titled "WATERLOO LILY", issued on the UK ORIGINAL 1st PRESS DERAM label.
SERIOUSLY RARE - Caravan’s fourth album released in 1972 following the considerable success of their best known and best selling album 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' was always going to be a difficult album to follow. In the event it was a task too far, the album was met with some consternation by Caravan followers and music critics alike. In relative terms Waterloo Lily sold in very small quantity, was not a commercial success never troubling the album chart compilers and ultimately led to the group disbanding. Consequently, it is EXTREMELY difficult to find THIS GENUINE FIRST ISSUE, FIRST PRESSING WITH THE DERAM BROWN LABEL. Occasionally red label variants are offered, and passed of, as first pressings and while they may be early and from an early 'mother' ONLY THE BROWN LABEL VARIANTS WITH THE 1 G STAMPERS IN THE VINYL RUN OFF ARE AMONG THE VERY EARLIEST TRUE FIRST PRESSINGS, THEY ARE ALSO PRESSED ON NOTICEABLY HEAVIER VINYL. This one is from EARLIEST ORIGINAL UK PRESS made just prior to the commercial release date in 1972 and parented by the first 'mother'.
The key 1st PRESS features are listed below:
COMPLETE ORIGINAL UK ALBUM & VERY FIRST ISSUE

EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND EXCELLENT FIRST PRESS ORIGINAL
"Waterloo Lily" was possibly the last album which really captured in its entirety their classic 70's early sound. This album has it all....great musicianship, excellent vocals and highly developed songs. CARAVAN were exceptionally influential in helping define the Canterbury sound with their involved jazz-rock sequences and wonderful instrumentation. "Waterloo Lily" may be their most progressive effort in pure definition with some wonderfully inventive aspects clearly giving the listener the feeling of musical exploration. This album is full of wide mood and tempo swings with some quiet parts and then leaping into full jazz inspired prog rock. There is no question that the combination of Hastings, Sinclair and Coughlan were a wicked musical combination. "Waterloo Lily" is a highly recommended album offering some of CARAVAN's best work ever! Another important addition to any music collection. This is absolutely essential if you enjoy progressive / Canterbury music. Yet another masterpiece! Brilliant album!!
This ORIGINAL 1972 UK DERAM RECORDS 1ST PRESS album is a 'MUST HAVE' for CARAVAN fans / collectors as well as DERAM label collectors and BRITISH 70's PROG ROCK fans.
