Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: ulra clean, fresh and attractive with just two or three small, light and faint spindle marks that hardly even show.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good average weight for this one.

Rarity: SCARCE: and hardly a big seller. Initial copies were on the blue Liberty label and then a few repressed on the black before being revamped with a new cover on the Sunset label. The first UK records included the very heavy and thick American Blue Thumb cover which was a common practice for American artists at this time, especialy ones that were unlikely to sell in any great numbers. This album is never easy to find in top conditions, most bought my certain types and rarely hi-fi connoisseurs. Also this is one of the few I have seen with hardly any traces of inner bag rash dulling on the playing surfaces. A album that rarely seems to avoid this as the record reacts badly to the polymer of the inner over the years. I have seen several severely affected by this and if indeed I did not own a copy like this myself, I would not even offer this one. The merest hint when viewed under angled bright light on side two and finding one with less will prove beyond difficult. One of my favourite Beefheart albums ever and always difficult to find this clean.

Brief Info: After the stunning debut Safe as Milk failed to sell, this second album appeared on a different label – Liberty, again only very briefly. Beefheart was finding it very difficult to find a loyal label that would offer his brand of music. This remains one of the most controversial in the Captain’s early catalogue mainly due to the production of Bob Krasnow. Vastly divided opinions on it’s sound and use of phasing has always divided Beefheart fans. This is a strictly personal opinion, I think it sounds fantastic and makes a pretty strange band sound even more weird. But some think is obscured their real sound, including van Vliet himself. This wonderful album was a great prelude to Beefheart’s classic Trout Mask Replica which again was issued on a new label – Zappa’s newly formed Straight. Here Beefheart’s sound progressed still further from the debut and was now becoming even more out-there and challenging. The Captain was no ordinary artist and his music had few rules, his genius is at last being more and more recognised as time passes. This landmark album was the last not to include those outlandish names for The Magic Band, the members real names were correctly used. Weirdness however was the order of the day – just check out the inside cover pictures. A man fast approaching his creative heights and this stereo record does it superb justice. Skillfully blending blues with psychedelia, I have never heard anything quite like this before. Never easy to find playable copies of this original title, this was a real pleasure to hear again. One of the very few I have seen with two shiny surfaces and minimal traces of bag dulling caused by reaction with the lining. With just a light surface mark on side two with NO sound, this is a fantastic record and it comes – as the earliest examples did – with the heavyweight, thick American cover, this also in very fine condition. This is a highly important recording, it’s twisted and at times difficult melodies quickly get into the subconscious and for those unfamiliar, it’s a wonderful experience. Only with Zappa’s total unrestricted artistic freedom did the Captain excel to even greater heights on his next masterpiece. To phase or not to phase? – who really cares, just enjoy this unique and brilliant album for what it is.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format and made with heavy very thick matt card. Printed and made inthe US with the Blue Thumb logo and number. This import cover was quite normal for the very first UK issues.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: prone to just about all forms of wear possible and seldom seen this nice.

Cover Front: This has survived the years very well indeed with only a little mild traces of rubbing and a tiny few small marks. The colour has real richness and density and actually looks better than the UK version which is equally prone to wear. A fairly modest semi-crease on the top right corner tip but little else and it remains clean and fresh. It will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back is superb and grades little short of Mint(-) with barely anything to fault at all. The lack or rubbing, creasing and especially ring wear makes this an outstanding back and few will even come close to matching it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Geninely weird and bizarre and worth the price alone as this will not be found elsewhere. Just as wear-prone as the outside faces, possible even more so being black. This has again has little to fault with just the odd small tip crease and any rub traces tiny and faint. One very small top edge dink, but this is exceptional.

Top Edges: A little rubbing on the left side and a tiny ‘thin’ but not splits or repairs. Any other rubbing is light and faint with just the one small dink as mentioned above. Both edges very straight and these light dead flat.

Bottom Edges: A little very gentle rubbing, but it has little visual impact being quite pale in colour. Again straight with no splits and very solid indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is sealed with a real edge that has little wear and is very neat and crisp. The record enters on the back edge which is very sharp and unthickened or burred, guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Unlike the very thin and under-strength UK spine, this is massively thick and robust and here has barely any wear. The merest hint of compression towards the bottom (this being critical), the surface and both folds are superb. All text is fully present and unworn but is centred quite low so some is visible via back viewing. This a blemish in manufacture in the folding which at least is very square so the edges are parallel.

Corners: A little tip rubbing but few will look this neat overall. One or two tip creases but very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Few of these very early US covers will survive 44-years looking this good, clearly this has been well looked after and any hints of it’s vintage are only very small on the front. A Beefheart classic sleeve that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The Polydor lined inner is near excellent with some corner creasing and a little darkened. The lining clear as seen through two crisp and undamaged window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT(+): this is a very fine visual copy that has only one light surface mark on side two that has NO sound at all. Under bright angled light, there merest hint of inner bag reaction to the surface, but probably the lightest ever seen on a one to ten scale, this is barely even a one. Clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed – a record rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs and those of a certain type – finding a copy this clean is very difficult. Hardly played with no penetrating marks, it sounds great too, a superb example of one of the earliest ever made.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive record that when seen is invariably in very poor conditions, plays up to and most all even exceeds it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range. The controversial use of phasing is highly interesting and I love it. The stereo imagery works well too and the overall sound is presentated very differently to the mono version. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a record that so often suffers indifferent pressing quality. Overall a lovely pressing for a fairly difficult album, this has little to fault at all and I enjoyed it immensely. This is an album I can compare to nothing else heard – a superb follow-up to the classic ‘Safe as Milk’ debut. You can imagine the fate for probably the majority of these, played on goodness knows what, this is always a joy to hear when sounding this clean. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record which remains high in my favourites list from this period. Both cover and record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merit my strongest recommendation. This master avant garde bluesman rarely failed to please and this was the perfect prelude to the main event that followed…

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
