Generally acclaimed as the strongest album of his comeback, and by some as his best since Trout Mask Replica, Doc at the Radar Station had a tough, lean sound owing partly to the virtuosic new version of the Magic Band (featuring future Pixies sideman Eric Drew Feldman, New York downtown-scene guitarist Gary Lucas, and a returning John "Drumbo" French, among others) and partly to the clear, stripped-down production, which augmented the Captain's basic dual-guitar interplay and jumpy rhythms with extra percussion instruments and touches of Shiny Beast's synths and trombones. Many of the songs on Doc either reworked or fully developed unused material composed around the time of the creatively fertile Trout Mask sessions, which adds to the spirited performances. Even if the Captain's voice isn't quite what it once was, Doc at the Radar Station is an excellent, focused consolidation of Beefheart's past and then-present.

The lengthy "Sheriff of Hong Kong" is one of Doc at the Radar Station's standouts, the main song that connects the harsh, angular, new wave-influenced sound of this album back to the primordial R&B stomp of Captain Beefheart's earliest records. (There are claims that most of the material on this album was first written in the burst of productivity that surrounded Trout Mask Replica, but the punky stomp of this track sounds much more like Safe As Milk.) The prodigal Drumbo, John French, is the powerhouse of this song, playing not only the drums (one of the only two songs on the album where he does) but also the bass and rhythm guitar. The resulting unity of the rhythm section gives the song a vital, nearly funky, throb that's missing from much of the rest of the frequently grating (in a good way) Doc at the Radar Station.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ?SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a visible cutout saw-mark (an indent about 2.5 cm / ~1" long ) on one of its seams.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners. (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)
