Side A is a pretty smooth blend of soul, funk, and Afro-Cuban jazz, sort of somewhere between Rare Earth and War. About half the songs have lyrics -- late-60s spiritualistic stuff like 'people get together, do your own thing, move in the right direction', etc. On side B, the band stretches out a lot more... the side starts out in a very Coltrane-ish vein, then turns toward Hugh Masekela (and I'm not talking about 'Grazing in the Grass'). Recommended if you like groove music that takes you on 20-minute cosmic journeys.
The previous reviewers have focused on the guitarist, who is actually not a major player on the album. Speaking as one who is not a Sonny Sharrock devotee, I can say that it sounded to me like the album contained occasional intrusions from someone who didn't really know how to play guitar. Maybe it's just that that style seemed out of place in this setting.
