Description
Up for bid is an open box containing 25 Allied Recording Company 16" acetate discs.
Normal records are formed quickly from lumps of plastic.
An acetate disc is a heavy disc and is created by using a recording lathe to cut a sound groove in the surface of a special lacquer coated blank disc. This process requires expensive equipment and expert skill for good results.
It looks like a vinyl record, but has a metal plate (usually aluminum) that is covered in a film of nitro-cellular lacquer.
They were made for special purposes and almost never for sale to the general public.
When recorded they play on a normal phonograph but will degrade by wear quickly.
The discs have an extra pilot hole in the label area used to engage a special pin which prevented the disc from slipping during the recording process.
These are being sold as a collectible item.
