I will admit that l have not been a big collector of test press vinyl. Sure it's essentially the first copies made of a record you probably really love. But the trade off is usually you don't get the whole package. The entire vision of artwork and lyrics and packaging etc. Personally... I want as much of the artists vision as they make available and put into their work of art.
But that said, when the chance came to get this amazing album, l couldn't pass it up. Plus it came with unique artwork that adds to the mystery. Where as the coverart on the final edition was almost impossible to see (deliberately) - this test press clearly shows what that original photo actually entails.
Atsuo once described Z.O.A as a similar discovery to first finding The Melvins. Leading him to more musical questions than answers. He became a huge fan of Shinji Kuroki guitar work and he describes Seiichirou Morikawa vocal style as having "only passion and soul".
The first time Morikawa and Boris collaborated was for the tracks Howl Pt.1 & 2 which were recorded in 2013 and released in 2014 on The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked (Extra).
Dog Knights made these test press versions available at the same time the other variants and the Phenomenon Drive editions went online. An edition of 5 copies was announced.
