Description

This auction is for the Boris- The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked LP, released by Kult of Nihilow Records in Finland. This LP is brand new and everything is absolutely mint. Limited to 500 copies, this record is loooong gone at this point. Great stuff that fans of bands like Sunn, Growing, and Khanate will absolutely go apey over.

“The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked” is the latest long player from Japanese power trio/doom export, Boris, this time packaged as limited orange vinyl in a clear mylar sleeve from Finland’s Kult of Nihilow. The music probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone well versed in the crushing drone doom of Boris, but it is definitely less on the metal side and more on the screeching drone/hiss side than usual. The three tracks hardly employ any percussion at all and shiploads of distortion and feedback, as the trio meanders through opaque waters of trance inducing fuzz and more solemn explorations with nary a hook or groove in site. The end results are not too far from a garage doom answer to the kind of dark drone affairs that Godspeed You Black Emperor specializes in, and maybe Flying Saucer Attack or the Dead C before them, but Boris blows everything up with its own panoramic view and minimal, repetitive approach. In the case of something like “A Bao A Qu,” this means a loan reverb-drenched acoustic guitar is stroked over distant feedback lines before a massive approaching wave of fuzz and squelch drowns everything out from view, including said acoustic guitar. 20 min closer “The Dead Angle Which it Continues Showing” is the kind of down-tuned sludge monolith we’ve come to expect from these titans, but again drums are MIA and the feedback is raised to a maximum, so that what begins as Earth-ian minimal riffs of thorazine induced doom eventually maxes out as speaker crackling Merzbow white noise. For “metal” or “heavy psych” this is a fairly avant-garde stuff, but hardly a surprise given the diversity of what’s come from Boris before now. They’ve always been the kind of doom band that appeals to people who scoff at the notion of doom. For those looking to dive into the more minimal and meditative side of sludge, it’s a good place to start. - Lee Jackson
