Description
Here is a one-of-a-kind original master tape from February 1978, containing eight of the nine songs from Bobby Thurston's Sweetest Piece of the Pie LP. It includes a receipt signed to producer Willie Lester (who produced the record with Rodney Brown), and the original box with track sheet from Omega Recording in the suburbs of Washington, DC. It's most likely that Lester mixed the tracks at Omega for his own reference, while they were recorded live at nearby American Star studios in Falls Church. These appear to be an early mix of the same takes on the album, with fewer overdubs than the versions that were ultimately released on the Mainline LP. The title track in particular is distinctly sparer than the issued version, with less percussion and a sleepier feel. Others, like the Blaxploitation funk number "Flash" have slight differences, such the sound effects in the outro being mixed much louder. Some, like "Treat Me the Same Way" sound pretty much identical to the issued version, sometimes with the fade-out being a few seconds later or sooner. I will include full digitized audio files of all eight tracks on a thumb drive to the buyer, along with the tape and receipt. The tape has been well kept. It sounds a little flat compared to the final mixes on the LP (at least on the equipment that is available to me), but plays beautifully from start to finish. Below are a few excerpts. This reel somehow found its way to the West Coast and into the estate of a former music industry professional.
