Pretty! Offered here is a spectacular original 1956 first pressing of Jimmy Rogers' definitive masterpiece, "Walking By Myself" b/w "If It Ain't Me" on the legendary Chess label (#1643).
For the collector who prioritizes audio fidelity and visual "pop," this copy is a rare find. Most Chess blues 45s from this era were played into the ground; finding one that retains its original "wet" factory luster is a true event.
RARE "CHEESS" MATRIX ERROR:
This specific pressing features the highly collectible typographical error in the dead wax. Instead of the standard "CHESS" etching, the matrix clearly reads "CHEESS". This error is a hallmark for serious Chicago Blues specialists and confirms this as an early, authentic 1956 strike. Finding this specific "Chees" variant in Near Mint condition is exceptionally difficult.
Condition Report
• Vinyl (Near Mint / NM): The surfaces are lovely. They exhibit a mirror-like deep gloss that is almost never seen on 70-year-old Chess pressings. There are no visible scuffs, scratches, or signs of "graying" groove wear, only a minuscule marks when held to bright light. This copy appears to have been played only a handful of times and carefully archived.
• Labels: The A-side "Walking By Myself" label is bright and clean, B-side is VG+ and shows characteristic surface peeling/chipping around the center spindle area—a common manufacturing trait for 1950s Chess records. All text remains bold and legible.
• Original Sleeve: This record comes housed in its original record shop heavyweight plain tan kraft sleeve. The sleeve is still crisp and sturdy.
