Bill Evans Quintet--Interplay, Mono Riverside RM 445 Freddie Hubbard (tp), Bill Evans (p), Jim Hall (g), Percy Heath (b), Philly Joe Jones (d). Recorded in NYC, July 16, 1962.
Vinyl: VG+... Although there are multiple less-than-perfect spots, all of them are of uniformly low-volume and they should not be a major obstacle to the full appreciation of this album. The sound quality is completely intact and quite outstanding. (In more detail): A-Side: The first two tracks have segments with low-volume ticking and some minimal surface noise interspersed with fine sections. The third track has a few seconds of light consecutive ticking but mainly fine. B-Side: The first track has some surface noise and clicks right at the start. After that the whole side plays very well with just a few scattered low-volume tick. The B-Side could easily grade VG++.
Covers: VG++... The back cover has some peeled areas and age-related yellowing and discoloration. The spine is rubbed but the jacket has no seam splits, a minimum of fraying and just a trace of ring-wear. The front graphic is clean and quite fresh-looking. Overall a very acceptable jacket.
Note on Bill Evans and this recording: After the tragic death of Scott LaFaro in an auto accident on July 6, 1961 (age 23 and 12 days after the epoch-making Vanguard trio sessions) Evans did not record as a group leader again until May 1962. Then, in short order came the trio albums Moonbeams and How My Heart Sings (recorded in May/June 1962, with Chuck Israels replacing LaFaro), and the larger-group recordings Interplay (July '62) and the then-unreleased quintet recording featuring Zoot Sims and Jim Hall (August '62, released later as part of the Interplay Sessions Milestone double-LP).
