This beautiful and rare LP from Deutsche Grammophon (419 772-1, manufactured in West Germany, DDD stereo, white circle label) features Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s majestic account of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 43, recorded 'live' in the Grosser Saal of the Musikverein, Vienna in October 1986. Though some have an expressed a preference for Bernstein's earlier NYPO account, for this listener his DG remake benefits from the added frisson of 'live' performance, here imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion.

This Sibelius LP – along with the conductor's DG Mahler albums – must be counted among Bernstein's last recordings to be issued in the long-play format. The sound is of demonstration quality, the artwork striking, the whole a superb memento of Bernstein.

The head of production for this recording was Hanno Rinke, the recording supervisor Hans Weber, and the recording engineer Klaus Scheibe.

Incidentally, the strking cover photo is taken from the book “Stille des Nordens” (“Silence of the North”) from the series Nature’s Desire, issued by the publishing house of Rombach, Freiberg, August 1987. There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in English, French, and Italian (by Bayan Northcott), as well as in German (by Michael Stegemann).

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, this is close to NM. There is minor wear to the lower-right corner and a bit of creasing, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
