Beecham - Handel MESSIAH - Soria Edition 4LPs Box - Rca LDS-6409 (Shaded Dog 2s thruout) - BEST!
There are, as we all know, about a ka-zillion Messiahs out there, each with its own strength. But, truth be told, in answer to which you would bring to that desert island, if you could only pick one, this would be your winner. Sure is mine. Beecham's read is simply, well, glorious, he at baton over the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, with soloist support from Jennifer Vyvyan, Monica Sinclair, Jon Vickers, and Giorgio Tozzi.
Whatsmore, the Soria edition pressings are to die for, this copy being a second stamper and in very fine shape. Of all eight surfaces, there is but one line, short, on side 4, and the rest of the way just a simple rubber mat scuff here and there, perhaps three amid the original pressing's shine.
The previous music loving owner has marked each of the audiophile inner sleeves with the dead wax numbers from the enclosed disc. And the booklet, published in Switzerland by Skira, has all of the color plates intended, scattered throughout the 25-page essay from Beecham on this glorious music.
Please note that the backside of the upper portion of the handsome slipcase has entirely split and had to be taped. This does not appear tacky nor has it compromised the integrity of this great package. Leather bound "book-like" binding looks old and rare, and, of course, handsome.
In my view, a fine prize in vinyl literature and a classic of extraordinary proportion. Bravo, Sir Thomas!
