Beatles Yellow Submarine/Steppenwolf LP Label Error

This LP is actually John Kay and the Sparrows with a Beatles “Yellow Submarine” first pressing label affixed to Side 1. The Sparrows were John Kay’s first band before he formed Steppenwolf.

Cover---The cover is in good condition. Seams and spine are intact, but they do show loss of slick from shelfwear. The top left corner of the spine has just over a one-inch split. Front and back covers show light to moderate ringwear and dirtwear, nothing abnormal. Top corner has been clipped for the cut-out bin.

Labels---Both labels are very clean. The Apple label has one spindle mark only visible under the bare bulb. There is no perimeter text below the full Apple on side 1, making this label a first original Apple label from 1969. For those who are Beatles labels collectors, you will know that sometimes Capitol Records consigned other record companies to press their LP’s. This was in fact the case for The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” LP from early 1969. And that’s how it came to be that there could be two completely different record company’s labels on the same disc.

An extremely rare occurrence in factory mispresses!

See photos for the discrepancy in catalogue numbers, which show that the wrong label is affixed. The Apple label bears the Apple catalogue number, “SW-153,” whereas the dead wax clearly has the Columbia number stamped into it.

Vinyl---Both sides of the vinyl are in a beautiful VG+ to VG++ condition. The Apple side is in VG+, with two very light scuffs visible under the bare bulb. The Columbia side is VG++, almost new-looking. Others would go ahead and call it NM, but I won’t, just for conservative-grading’s sake. Both plates are 1A, making this LP a first pressing original. Original Columbia inner sleeve is present.
