THE BEATLES - 'PLEASE, PLEASE ME'
1963 UK *BLACK & GOLD* LABEL MONO LP
**'NORTHERN SONGS' LABEL VARIANT**
This rare 1963 mono pressing is on the UK black & GOLD Parlophone label: PMC 1202
Both labels carry the corrected 'Northern Songs...' publishing credits for songs: 1 & 2 on side 1; and 4 & 6 on side 2.
The 'MT' tax/price code is visible in the centre of the side 2 label.
Housed in a correct, front laminated, tri-flipback 'E.J. Day' mono cover with the 'Angus McBean' credit in the extreme lower right corner.
Complete with its original 'Use Emitex' poly-lined inner-sleeve.
Matrix numbers: XEX 421-1N & XEX 422-1N
Stamper numbers: 2/GH & 1/M
A fine set bearing just a few fine hairline scratches on label 1 but no writing, touch-up or missing paper.
Label 2 is pristine with just a few light spindle trails.
Visual: VERY GOOD PLUS
Clean & bright surfaces retaining a respectable deep gloss shine, bearing a few light fingernail scuffs & an occaisional small scratch.
There is one 3mm scratch which can just be felt with the fingertips between tracks 6 & 7 on side 1 but no other major faults.
Close inspection beneath a halogen desk lamp reveals some light sleeve removal hairlines but no further marks.
Heavy, sharp-edged quality vinyl which lies 100% flat both sides on the turntable with no signs of dishing or warping.
Audio: VERY GOOD PLUS
Carefully & certainly not overplayed, there is no significant lessening to the sound quality.
Listening at volume on headphones, I can report occaisional intermittant groovewear on some loud peaks but no crackle or heavy wear.
There are some light clicks between tracks 4 & 5 and 6 & 7 on side 1, but otherwise the bands & both run-ins play extremely quietly.
There are no jumps, repeats or any other audible faults.
Cover: VERY GOOD PLUS
The front panel retains a fine high-gloss, unscratched laminate displaying just two tiny wrinkles but no significant faults.
There is some lower edge shelfwear & rubbing to the lower corners, but the opening edges are both clean & sharp with no tears or 'feathering'.
The rear panel is bright, white & clean with no age or handling discolouration, marks or writing.
There is a 4cm section of missing paper to the upper right corner flipback, but all other are intact and present.
Both seams are strong & unsplit & the spine is uncreased with all the lettering clear, clean & undamaged.
Strict visual grading in daylight and directly under a halogen desk lamp.
All discs are carefully play graded in their entirety on a Rega P9 deck with an Ortofon Kontrapunkt 'A' cartridge.
