Description

Welcome to 20th Century Collectables

Quality vinyl for the discerning collector

A wonderful original 1963 UK mono -1N WITHDRAWN 1st pressing with ‘Parlophone’ rim labels, ‘Recording First Published’, with ultra-rare MT tax code and ‘JOBETE’ label credit.

An advanced pre-order copy pressed ahead of the 22nd November 1963 release date. The vinyl has only been played a few times since new (maybe less than 10 times). An extraordinary small amount of play for a 50 year old record of this the most desirable and rarest version of With the Beatles.

With recording for their second album still taking place as late as 24th October 1963 these -1N matrix pressings were hurriedly made by EMI for the impending deadline which was less than a month away. Mastered at high volume with an enhanced dynamic, production on these -1N pressings was quickly stopped and replaced by a succession of new and different sounding matrix masters before finally arriving at the most common -7N matrix.

This copy is not only the earliest matrix pressing of this album but it has the earliest and incorrect Jobete label credit for the song ‘Money’. This was corrected very early on in the pressing cycle to the correct ‘Dominion Belinda’ publishing credit.

These Jobete labeled copies are now becoming extremely difficult to source and their rarity in my opinion is under estimated. Of every 100 or so 1963 UK 1st issue copies of ‘With the Beatles’ only 1 or 2 will be a -1N matrix copy and of those copies only a small amount will carry the Jobete label credit.  For every 50 or so copies which carry the Jobete label credit (if you could ever find that many) only one or two will be in the category of excellent+ to nr mint. This gives some indication as to the rarity of this particular record. In short they are the rarest of the rare.

A record with certain investment potential and one not to be missed.

Happy Bidding and good luck!

CONDITION

Disc

Visual: EXCELLENT +

Very difficult to impress upon collectors how difficult it is to get these early ‘Jobete’ copies in this condition, nearly all copies I come across are worn out and unplayable. The vinyl still retains its original sheen and is undulled. Side one has only one or two very light marks. Side two has some general evidence of light play with some very light non feelable marks. The record lies 100% flat on the turntable.

Labels:  EXCELLENT +

A great set of labels with only a minimum of spindle trails indicating only a small amount of play. The early MT tax code is visible on side one. Side two carries the incorrect spelling of ‘You Really Gotta a Hold on Me’ and the ultra-rare ‘Jobete’ publishing credit.

Audio:  MINT-

A stunning sounding disc with absolutely no groovewear or distortion to any of the music signals. An audiophile copy of this the earliest pressing with all the original dynamics. ‘All My Loving’ and ‘You Really Got a Hold on Me’ as with the other tracks have all the clarity and detail of the original EMI Abbey Road recording. There is no surface noise to any of the music and virtually all gaps are silent. The only audio impairment was some faint ticks in the gap between tracks two and three on side one. The record does not jump or stick.

Cover

EXC+/ MINT-

An original 1st issue 1963 Garrod & Lofthouse cover with the heavier darker image of the Beatles. A superb and extremely impressive cover. The spine still retains its original square shape and is uncrushed; on very close inspection there is some very minor laminate flaking on the spine. The front panel has very little if any wear. The opening edge is unfeathered. The rear panel is in remarkable condition, very clean with no soiling or writing to any area. There is some natural ageing to some areas of the flipbacks. The track listing carries the incorrect ‘You Really Gotta Hold on Me’.  A stunning example of this iconic Robert Freeman cover.

Inner-sleeve Excellent +

Clean & correct with light wear but no seam splits or tears.
