I believe that since vinyl has become increasingly rare, that misprints of this kind will very soon become HIGHLY sought after and extremely valuable. If you disagree with me, then please show me YOUR pictures of your copy of this LP misprinted upside down! I value the true worth of this record at or above $1,000*.
(* Your mileage may vary. The world would be boring if we all agreed with each other and I don't mind if you disagree.)
There are at least tens of thousands of Butcher LPs still in existence. I have never seen any Beatles LP with this sort of a misprint before. A run of these 1970 editions must have gone out of the factory with this error but this is the first that I can find any record of. I suspect the rest do not survive. The front cover and back cover are upside down to one another. The back cover was applied upside down.
This is a "Hey Jude" album. Hey Jude is the title on the spine and the label. It is an Apple SW-385, with "MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS, INC".on the perimeter of the label, so we know that this was issued in 1970. In mint condition, without the misprint, any old reguarly printed copy of this issue of the LP is worth about $30.
The record comes with an original Capitol Records inner blue sleeve which must originally have gone along with another LP. This inner sleeve has been written on and has some splitting on at least two sides. Grade poor to good. It is rare in my experience to see this blue inner sleeve in the first place and my favorite authority on this sort of subject does not mention it in his book. Hey Jude was never released with this inner sleeve but this is how I got the LP when I bought it used - my guess is that the previous owner, just like I used to do, stacked up a few Beatles LPs to play on a turntable, and wasn't too careful about returning the right record to its original inner sleeve. This is kind of cool to have in any case.
The vinyl itself looks extemely clean. I have not played it to check for surface noise, pops, or clicks, but I don't believe that is as important as the cover. By visual inspecton, I grade the vinyl as Fine to Near Mint.
The cover sleeve is harder for me to grade. There are no splits, repairs, or seam problems of any kind. There are many signs of wear and minor imperfections, scuffs, ring wear, etc.but it is still a handsome looking sleeve. Please see the pictures and judge for yourself, but I'd grade this as Good ("good" on a scale of mint, near mint, very fine, fine, good, poor, and bad). It's definitely not fine but it's certainly not poor. Especially since there are no splits whatsoever.
