Butcher Cover History

The Beatles’ infamous “Butcher Cover” was the original artwork for their 1966 U.S. album Yesterday and Today. It featured the band in butcher smocks surrounded by raw meat and dismembered dolls, sparking outrage and leading Capitol Records to recall and replace the cover. Today, surviving copies are among the most valuable Beatles collectibles.

Photographer Robert Whitaker shot the controversial image, intending it as surrealist art rather than shock value. The Beatles posed in white butcher coats, draped with raw meat, doll parts, and false teeth.  Whitaker reportedly wanted to satirize the idolization of the band, portraying them as “butchers” of their own image.
