Genuine 1964 Version One mono issue of Vee-Jay’s Introducing The Beatles LP, with Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You. This is the variation with the smaller 45-size Vee-Jay label with the small oval logo.
A complicated piece, with all its variations, sub-variations, etc. - plus of course, the staggering number of counterfeits. So please read all details below and check out all the pics as well.
1) VARIATION ID:
The details below are from Bruce Spizer’s 1998 reference work, The Beatles Records On Vee-Jay (print edition), with page numbers listed.
Label/LP Variation: VJ 1062(1).MR2 (Description, p.122 / Photos, p.129)
45-size black label with colorband, small oval logo
Disc pressed by Monarch Records
LP Trail-off area:
- Hand etched date 6-29-63, initials RA and A
- Machine stamped Audio Matrix and “MR” in circle on both sides
- Side 1 - Hand-etched matrix number 63-3402 / Job # ∆5702
- Side 2 - Hand-etched matrix number 63-3403 / Job # ∆5702-X
Cover variation: VJ 1062(1).MC3, titles on back (column back) (Description, p.122 / Photos, p.126)
Also note in the pics:
- The inside of the cardboard cover has a 1/4” flap at both the top and the bottom.
- The “H” and “E” in “HONEY” (A Taste Of Honey) are printed clearly and perfectly.
2) VINYL CONDITION:
Based on both visual and play-grading, I’m grading it Very Good (VG). Please read the specifics below, so there won’t be any surprises or disappointments.
There are numerous light scuffs - also some visible scratches, none of them deep. On the turntable, there were a few isolated clicks and pops here and there, none of which overpowered the music itself. Both sides played great and sounded great.
The vinyl still has some luster, although it would benefit from a proper professional-grade cleaning.
LABELS: No writing, but definitely some visible spindle markings.
3) COVER CONDITION:
The cover is also Very Good (VG). Specifically:
FRONT AND BACK: Some wear on both the front and back. A few faint marks on the bottom left of the front (looks like black ink). No creases or bends, no writing or stains.
EDGES AND CORNERS: Although there are no actual seam splits, there are several areas along the edges where small pieces of the cover slick have come off, exposing the cardboard underneath - including all four corners.
Bottom edge: 3 1/2” exposed on the left, 3/4” on the right.
Top edge: 1/2” exposed on the left, 1/8” on the right.
Left edge/spine: 1/2” exposed at the top, 1/8” at the bottom.
