For an interesting sonic experience take 100 pressings of The Beatles White Album found in used record stores, thrift shops and garage sales then record them all. Next layer all 100 on top of each other and press it onto virgin vinyl. A truly unique listening session would be putting it mildly.
That’s what artist Rutherford Chang has accomplished. Yes the record starts off with that familiar chord from ‘Back In The U.S.S.R.’ but by ‘Goodnight’ the phasing of the combination of these 100 records does some interesting things to say the least.
Additionally MR Chang has layered all the labels and any cover embellishments from these same 100 copies onto this really unique album. Included with this art project album is a poster showing the chosen 100 copies that were used.
The White Album Project is an on going Art event now having over 1,000 different copies and all being unique. Some tell a story by way of all the scribbles and doodles found on what was once a “blank canvas”. Personally I remember my friends writing all over my first White Album using my family members in a comic strip type thing to tell a short story. This and thousands of others was his inspiration for this project and it’s a hit.
This double LP set and poster was Limited to a total of 800 copies in a one time pressing. Originally the first ones offered were selling for several hundred dollars but thankfully the price has leveled off a bit at around $150. The perfect copy displayed in the provided photos is being offered at a very reasonable price.
This one is for the Beatle Person who has it all and wants to try listening to the White Album in a new genre called ... the ultimate mashup?
