Bayard Rustin "Twelve Spirituals On The Life Of Christ" Fellowship Records. Rare original 1952 monophonic 10" LP pressing in great condition!
Quiet a rare record of interest for more than just being a record.
As a gay man, Mr. Rustin was a very public leader in civil rights, social movements, pacifism and gay rights. He was a key strategist with Martin Luther King Jr. and was always part of the core group that led the marches and the demonstrations in the 1950's and 1960's. Many of the leaders int he Civil Rights movement grew up around church culture and could sing, but almost none of them actually made a record. Bayard did! Please see labels for titles. Cover is EX very clean, sharp corners, no seam splits. Record has a few light scratches but is shiny and plays great!
"Bayard Rustin Sings Twelve Spirituals on The Life of Christ with readings from the Bible by James Farmer is a 10-inch LP[1] released in 1952 by civil rights and peace activist Bayard Rustin on Fellowship Records, a label owned by the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), for which Rustin was working as a youth organizer. The album consists of Rustin singing a cappella spirituals in the tenor register with scripture reading by James L. Farmer, Jr. The album was recorded shortly before Rustin left for Africa on a trip for the FOR. Rustin also recorded Elizabethan Songs and Negro Spirituals, with harpsichord accompaniment by Margaret Davison. It was also released by Fellowship Records."
