First side features seven tracks from Ben Chasny’s Six Organs Of Admittance that touch on all of his major working methods, from flames of percussion and bells through serpentine curlicues of acoustic guitar, beautiful song-forms, a glaze of drone and some disorienting audio manipulation. Side two is given over to two massive tracks by American primitive guitarist Jack Rose, the first being a long-awaited studio recording of his slide/drone work where he generates huge sheets of evocative micro-tonal detail by rapidly rubbing a metal slide up and down a single fret. Second track is a gorgeous slide/fingers reading of “Now That I’m A Man Full Grown”. Side three is from The MV/EE Medicine Show with Chris Corsano - “Massage From The Dakota Sioux” – and it feels like a further development of some of the strategies they first sketched on their Creek To Creation LP, with some celestially-orchestrated percussion fuelling a side-long ritual stomp. Dredd Foole is on side four, two tracks, the first of which is nothing but allusive bursts of freely-improvised non-verbal vocals fed straight into a microphone, generating a massive blast of post-tongue energy. Second track matches this kind of deeply affecting space-whisper with some classic-sounding acoustic guitar. Side five is taken up by Fursaxa’s “Aegean Lore”, a long guitar/vocal evocation that deals in the kind of heavy psychedelic gravity that’ll glue yr eyeballs to the sky. Side six, the final flip, features an inspired international hook-up between American folk-loner Joshua Burkett and Finland’s Kemialliset Ystävät, with vocals from Merja Kokkonen aka Islaja. The results are exactly what you’d hope for, with weird Popol Vuh-styled acoustic dirges subtly deformed by percussion, loops, wonky strings and a heavy pulse of electronics.
