Not a great deal of bands truly live up to the titles they give albums, but Buffalo's Volcanic Rock is certainly just that. It's fiery, explosive and will simply obliterate anything in its way. I greatly enjoyed Dead Forever, but the sophomore is a real step up, moving from bluesy pscyh to full on thunderous rock, easily on a par with the best from Sabbath. From the very beginning, the raucous insanity that is "Sunrise" gets the album off to a good start, and is easily one of the best psych songs of the era, with a driving riff and harsh, motorbreath vocals. That chorus will stick in your head for ages. "Freedom" is more of an epic, but is no less crushingly heavy, with a fantastic bassline and inspired lyrics. "Till My Death" is another shorter one, but is catchy, groovy and excellent, "The Prophet" is another epic, telling the tale of Moses, and is phenomenal, a hypnotic wonder that sucks you in and doesn't let go. And that's not even the end, with the classic "Pound of Flesh Shylock", a miserable doom recording that is up there with Sabbath's more desparing compositions, but is still supercharged and frantic. Overall, this is easily one of my favourite ever heavy psych albums, and I urge you to go check it out ASAP. Classic stuff.
