Not to be confused with their self-titled debut album, this double LP is clearly the best Springfield compilation, at least until the overdue day when a box set appears that includes everything recorded by this superb band. It does miss some good songs, especially from the first album, but zeroes in on their very best work, and includes a nine-minute version of "Bluebird" available nowhere else, as well as excellent liner notes. [NOTE: Unterberger's review was written before multiple Buffalo Springfield boxed sets became available]

I suppose that the box set has made this collection obsolete, but if you don't want to plunk down the box set money, this is a pretty nice overview of this great group. The songs are all here [23 of 35 groups the group released on the 3 studio albums], if you're reading this you probably already know their names. What I like though is that you get the expanded "Bluebird" (which I hear Stills didn't like at all) and you get some really great Richie Furay songs. Furay was the overlooked member of this band, and deserves the same kind of props that the more famous Stills and Young got. I'll bet Neil would agree. Maybe not Stills, but Neil would. Also of note is the sterling production quality of the songs. whether it's the stuff produced by outside guys, or the band members themselves (not a lot of that going on in the late 60's,) they really got the most from the band on equipment that's absolutely stone age by todays standards. Just one more factor that makes this band so remarkable.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The records come in their original stock inner sleeves.

(c)           The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Although NO part of the shrink wrap is missing, the previous owner secured the shrink wrap with two pieces of scotch tape (applied diagonally, across the corners) in the two corners on the opening side; we assume these can be removed with a minor effort.  This has absolutely NO effect on the appearance of the cover.
