Description
Budgie
'Bandolier'
MCA, UK, 1975
MCF 2723
BY THE time Budgie reached this their fifth album they were firing on all six cylinders. Their first few albums were good but held back by p*ss poor production. 'Never Turn Your Back On A Friend' and 'In For The Kill' raised the barrier considerably but it's 'Bandolier' that signaled Budgie's arrival at the gates of hard rock delirium. Guitarist Tony Bourge had really honed his riffing skills to perfection and Shelley's high pitched whine never sounded so wacky. 'Breaking All The House Rules' and 'Napoleon Bona Part' are colossal slices of pure unadulterated riffing, heavier than lead weights and more crushing than Sabbaff at their peak. In fact I'd go so far to as to say that Bourge is, pound for pound, a better riffmeister than Iommi. I'll take a lot of flak for that but you know it's true. That's Budgie, the greatest power trio that ever stalked the face of the planet.
