You are bidding on a Buddy Holly and the Crickets <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Brunswick acetate promo 10 inch 78rpm record pressing of “That’ll Be The Day”.  I bought this several years back on ebay and am now liquidating much of my collection. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a very unique piece of history at a very reasonable beginning bid. There is no reserve so it will be sold to the highest bidder.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

What is an Acetate?

An acetate (used years ago) is a metal disc that is typically covered in a soft cellulose material designed to be used to record music in a recording studio so that the artist could have immediate feedback on what the completed song would sound like in record form. Very few of these acetates were made, usually only between three and five and those usually went home with the artist or members of the band. That is what makes them so rare.  I do not know much about the particular history of this one but I know that I have never seen another like it on ebay or anywhere else. I do not know if this is an original or a reproduction, so please bid accordingly.

Acetates were never meant for repeated play. They were actually cut onto a machine that looked somewhat like a lath. Some acetates were all metal. This one appears to be an all metal acetate.  It has “Sample Copy Not For Sale” on the label. It also has the numbers 9-55009 on the left side of the label. This is a one sided disc. The back side is blank. There is a small rectangular area above the spindle hole that appears to be where tape once was. There are no stamped or etched markings in the vinyl trailoff. The acetate is in very good condition with no chips crack, scratches etc. It plays all the way through with no skips and has sort of a “Heartbreak Hotel” echo effect to the song.
