HEY GUYS AND GALS FROM RADIO SHOW COLLECTING LAND! HERE WE PRESENT A LANDMARK SHOW THAT IS VERY HARD TO FIND AND IS A CLASSIC, CLASSIC ROCK SHOW.
IT IS CALLED BACK TRACK AND WAS HOSTED BY LOS ANGELES LEGENDARY DJ JIM LADD
IT COMES FROM THE NBC RADIO ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK, HOME OF SOME OF THE GREATEST RADIO SHOWS EVER BROADCAST.
THIS SHOW STARTED AS A KNOCK OFF OF ABC RADIO'S FLASHBACK SERIES HOSTED BY BILL ST JAMES WHICH WAS TAKING THE COUNTRY BY STORM. NBC DECIDED WHATEVER WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ABC COULD BE BETTER ON NBC SO THEY HIRED JIM LADD. WHAT A CHOICE!
James William Ladd (January 17, 1948 – December 17, 2023) was an American disc jockey (DJ), radio producer and writer. He was one of the last notable remaining free form rock DJs in United States commercial radio.
Ladd first gained national prominence as host of the hour long nationally syndicated radio program Innerview, which aired weekly on over 160 stations nationwide for twelve years
Ladd began his career in 1969 at KNAC, a small Long Beach rock station. After two years there, he moved to Los Angeles station KLOS. In 1974 he moved to KMET, known to its legions of listeners as "The Mighty Met", where he would remain for most of the next 13 years (returning to KLOS in 1984, but going back to KMET again, 2 months before they changed format), while also hosting and producing Innerview, an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program that aired during the same period.
After what many listeners and people in the industry perceived as a long steady decline in the station's output, attributed by most accounts to the station's decision to bring in consultant Lee Abrams and the strict "album-oriented rock" formatting he favored, KMET management shocked southern California and all of radio by abruptly dumping rock music, the call letters, and the entire air staff on February 14, 1987, becoming KTMV ("The Wave"), featuring a new age format with no DJs at all.
For several years, Ladd worked only on-and-off on the radio because he refused to follow a playlist, as most station owners demanded. In the late 1980s, Ladd worked at KMPC-FM where he helped to shape its "Full Spectrum Rock" blend of classic and modern rock and was enthusiastic about its rebranding as KEDG "the Edge" in March 1989. However, Ladd was laid off when the station abruptly abandoned its rock format two months later
Ladd and his free-form rock music returned to KLOS in 1997 and aired until October 26, 2011, Monday thru Thursday from 10PM to 2AM (PDT) and on Sunday from 9PM to Midnight. His show routinely led its time slot in Arbitron ratings. KLOS renewed his contract in January 2007. In addition, he produced, wrote, and narrated a number of nationally syndicated programs, including interviews, concert specials and album premieres.
Later, Ladd used his MySpace and Facebook pages to interact with his listeners, whom he referred to as "The Tribe." He often took requests in the comments section and used the site as a source to promote free form radio. Beginning March 10, 2008, Ladd's show was sgtreamed on KLOS's web site.
On October 26, 2011, Ladd was among various staffers fired from KLOS following the acquisition by Cumulas Media.
On November 5, 2011, Ladd gave a three-hour farewell broadcast on AM station KFI in Los Angeles
On May 6, 2005, Ladd received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of the first 38 years of his groundbreaking radio career
Ladd was married to writer, poet and musician Helene Hodge. He died of a heart attack on December 17, 2023, at the age of 75
AS PAUL HARVEY USED TO SAY, 'HERE IS THE REST OF THE STORY'
ABC WAS NOT HAPPY AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THE SHOW WAS TOO MUCH LIKE THEIR OWN FLASHBACK SHOW.
THE END RESULT WAS THAT BACK TRACK WAS CANCELLED.
CHECK EVERY JIM LADD REFERENCE ON THE INTERNET AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE THIS SHOW IN HIS RESUME.
THAT MAKES THIS SHOW EVEN RARER THAN THE LP FLASHBACK VERSIONS.
AND YOU WILL ONLY FIND IT ON KEITH'S KOLLECTABLES.
THE SHOW WAS TITLED 'FRIENDLY SKIES'
BUT, JIM LADD DIDN'T STOP WITH BACK TRACK. HIS HEADSETS SHOW USED THE SAME FORMAT AND ARE LEGENDARY
EVEN THE NATIONAL COMMERCIALS AFTER SO MANY YEARS ARE FUN TO LISTEN TO AND BRING BACK FOND MEMORIES EVEN THOUGH WE HATED THEM BACK THEN. SO HERE ARE THE BIG QUESTIONS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT RADIO SHOWS:
WHAT IS A RADIO SHOW?
WHY COLLECT THEM?
WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?
Well, those are good questions, especially if you have never known of them.
First allow me tell you my own personal story of discovering the wonder of radio shows.
I discovered radio shows quite by accident while reading one of my favorite (long since departed) magazines called "Discoveries" (It was later bought by the same company that publishes "Goldmine" which I personally always considered a lesser publication, but that is another story.
This was before ebay became the driving force in radio show sales (and everything else) in the later 1990's.
I was especially attracted in "Discoveries" to a two page (or more) spread in each issue by a guy called "The Old Hippie".
Let me tell you, the Old Hippie had it all. He was a real pioneer. Way before anyone knew what radio shows even were let alone that they could be bought as rarities, he had the market cornered.
Most shows that he advertised were way beyond my budget but I drooled over those pages every issue and once in awhile I could afford one or two.
Now, I have attempted in my own humble way to take on the mantle of "The Old Hippie". I have listed over 11,000 unique radio shows of all genres for you all to drool over, and most at prices, hopefully, that collectors can better afford! I want to make available to collectors what I could not afford and especially in these days of higher prices and lesser availability.
Radio shows are harder and harder to find in quantity and the prices for the ones still out there just go higher and higher as they disappear from the market. However, because of my large presence on eBay, I am always being contacted with selling offers, some of which I take advantage of and some I have to pass on because of the prices. I have found that by buying in bulk, even when many or most of the shows are lesser known but still amazing shows, I can offer the best prices on all titles.
So, again, what is a radio show?
Radio Shows are syndicated productions by one of several large and small distributors who supply broadcast product to radio stations normally during weekends when the usual air personalities have a break.
Many air on Saturday or Sunday mornings, afternoons or evenings or less often on weekdays or during overnight segments. They often feature some of the best known voices for their genre from across the country thus the Dick Clark's and Casey Kasem's and Rick Dees and Dick Bartley and so many others.
People collect them for various reasons.
Some just collect the series because they like it and want them all.
Some collect their favorite artists or genre of music. Rather than an album by the artist or a compilation, they have a unique presentation of their favorite artist or music not available anywhere else and often with dj presentation which is very entertaining.
Some collect interviews with their favorite artists as most shows had interview segments.
Some collect commercials especially old car commercials but certainly not limited to only those.
AND, these shows are in limited quantity.
They were pressed just for affiliate stations and many have just a few in circulation. Some of the more popular shows may have as many as a few hundred of each week's show that survived but think about it. A few hundred for some 350 million Americans and millions of overseas collectors who look for unique presentations of their favorite artists or form of music.
Many radio stations just tossed them away after airing because they could never be aired again due to the time limited commercials and the limited storage space at most radio stations (believe me I know, I worked at one for over seven glorious years, the best of my life!)
SO they are increasingly hard to find.
They were first distributed on reel to reel tape or on lp (12 inch or 16 inch), later on CD and even later (after 2000 for most shows) on CDR. Now they are not available at all to collectors since they are distributed by digital download much like you get your music from iTunes.
These shows become rarer and rarer every day because the people who buy them hold on to them.
Luckily because of my worldwide presence on eBay, past radio professional radio guys and gals who have been saving their shows their whole professional lifetimes and since they retired from the business, and have come to a point where they are willing to pass them to we collectors, along with lifelong collectors who find that there is no one in their family to pass on these rare gems of Americana. They come to me so they can have money to leave to their family who otherwise would probably just trash these valued collectables of their lifetime or give them to Goodwill and not have the benefit of what they are worth, but know through my national and world wide reputation that I will give them full value for their collections that I can then pass on to collectors like me all over the world.
The shows that you get now and hold on to will never decrease in value and only increase.
I have prided myself since the start to provide the best and fairest cost with a no holds barred guarantee that you will be happy or I refund your money. I sell them for near what I bought them for. I give volume discounts and discount postage always. As the postal service increases their rates, my shipping rates over the years has decreased.
And, I have one of the biggest radio show libraries in the world consisting of over fifteen thousand shows, so many that I don't even know all that I have and am sometimes amazed when I go to look for one show and find another that I did not realize I had.
Finally, it is Americana at its best.
Whether the show be from the 60's or 2000's, rock, countdown, oldies, country, classical, religious, jazz or big band, it is unique and home grown. And you just can't find them anywhere. Even record stores that still exist will rarely have any.
Radio shows are wonderful representations of the real golden age of radio at least music wise. And every one you buy is an original, not a copy, not a remake - all limited editions in the hundreds at most and many much less. Once you get hooked, like me, it is a love affair for life! Welcome to the Club!
This show, for all you vinyl lovers, and there are a bunch out there judging by the number of you that have responded to my rare and old vinyl radio show sales, is a rare vinyl that you will rarely find on eBay ever.
Remember, when you buy this show, not only will you own the tunes but also interspersed between songs is fascinating commentary on the artists and songs and wonderful interview segments and other features.
Also, keep in mind that this and all shows are not just about the music - the music can be found anywhere. It is the mixture of great music and great announcing that makes it so entertaining.
As well, it is a piece of radio history. You just aren't going to find these shows anymore. Think of what they will be worth in a few years! (IF you wanted to sell.) I am selling to share with other music lovers what I was able to get at a reasonable price
These are all such wonderful shows and would be special additions to your music collection.
Good Luck and God Bless You.
