Eno's solo debut, Here Come the Warm Jets, is a spirited, experimental series of unabashed pop songs on which Eno often reprises his Roxy Music function as "sound manipulator," taking the lead vocals however leaving a lot of the instrumental paintings to numerous studio cohorts (together with ex-Roxy pals Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay, plus Robert Fripp and others). Eno's compositions are quirky, whimsical, and catchy, his lyrics weird and frequently free-associative, with a decidedly darkish bent of their humor ("Baby's on Fire," "Dead Finks Don't Talk"). Yet the album would not sound almost as manic because it does with out Eno's wildly unpredictable sound processing; he coaxes otherworldly noises and textures from the handled guitars and keyboards, layering them in complicated preparations or bouncing them off each other in a peculiar cacophony. Avant-garde but very accessible, Here Come the Warm Jets nonetheless sounds exciting, forward-looking, and densely detailed, revealing extra intricacies with each play.
