"If people don't care it means that something never existed." - Meitei Meitei a Hiroshima-based musician who has been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad for highlighting the lost mood of Japan has announced that his masterpiece album Komachi released by Métron Records in 2019 will be released on CD for the first time and the out-of-print vinyl version will be reissued. Meitei often finds direction in his compositions in his impressions of Japan of the past and considers himself to have an old-fashioned spirit. During the production of this album he lost his beloved grandmother. He considered her who passed away at the age of 99 to be the last person to experience and understand the traditional Japanese atmosphere. The driving force behind his music and art is his desire to shed light on the era and aesthetics that he believes are disappearing from the collective consciousness of Japanese people with each passing generation in other words the "lost mood of Japan." And this album Komachi is dedicated to his late grandmother. Hauntingly delicate and resonant of timelessness Komachi is saturated with white noise intricate field recordings and the hypnotic sounds of flowing water. Though confidently modern like J-Dilla Komachi's lineage can be traced back to the floating worlds of ukiyo-e and gagaku through the prism of '80s Japanese ambient pioneers and '90s pastoral sample-based artists like Yokota Susumu and Takemura Nobukazu. Each of the 12 tracks is constructed as a separate sonic diorama crafted not only to evoke nostalgia but also to explore the dilemmas of old and new in contemporary Japanese society. This pervasive narrative runs throughout recalling the works of Kawabata Yasunari and Natsume Soseki writers similarly fascinated by the introspective stillness that permeates traditional Japanese domestic life as well as the films of Ozu Yasujiro and Miyazaki Hayao.
