Finally we’ve managed to get copies of what has become my favourite of all the many Boris releases; the eardrum shattering DroneEvil. The concept behind this record is simple; you are supposed to play both records simultaneously and let the sounds synchronize creating a new piece of music, but in reality both discs can exist as their own beast – giving you two hour long albums in one beautiful package. Okay so this idea isn’t exactly too new, I seem to remember the Flaming lips doing it with four cds quite some time ago, but Boris carry off their brief with an elegance rarely seen in the contemporary metal scene. The first disc (Disc Drone) is a spacious collection of cavernous groans which bear comparison with Norwegian gloomy feller Deathprod or glacial drone overlords KTL. Bowed metallic sounds echo overhead while distant rumbles bubble and croak beneath; this is perhaps the finest soundtrack ever created to being lashed to the rocks in a cave as the tide slowly makes its entrance, gradually rising until it submerges your limp body, jolly stuff huh? Luckily the second disc raises the spirits a little after the dank and mossy groans of Disc Drone; here we have Disc Evil which begins with ‘Red’, a twenty minute masterpiece which takes the best bits of Earth’s windswept spaghetti-western rock they perfected with ‘Hex’ and re-wires it to suit a Japanese horror/exploitation movie. This is brooding menace at its best, with shimmering guitars and clipped percussion forming one of the finest pieces Boris have managed and is a track with revels in its subtlety. Interestingly though the subtle grandeur of ‘Red’ is shattered abruptly with second track ‘Evil Wave Form’ which suddenly makes the Evil of the disc startlingly obvious as crashing waves of distortion pummel our eardrums with rusty nails and iron filings. Occasionally you might forget that Boris make some of the loudest and most stomach-churning metal around, and here they’re not afraid to mark out their territory. The sentiment is neatly extended on the album’s closing track ‘The Evilone Which Sobs’ a track which you probably need to hear to believe – and trust me this is best heard extremely loud causing maximum upset to the world around you. A crucial statement in both gloomy drone and bowel churning metal – you know you need ‘DroneEvil’ in your life....
