Booker T. Jones was so taken with the Beatles' Abbey Road, he claims he had to respond, just to say "thanks." He convened the MG's -- drummer Al Jackson Jr., bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, and guitarist Steve Cropper, and recorded McLemore Avenue, a cover version of the entire Abbey Road album in three long medleys (that approximated the structure of the Beatles' album -- particularly its second side) with a cover of George Harrison's "Something" set aside as a single. the MG's even aped the Beatles' cover photo, with one of them strolling down McLemore Avenue, the home of Stax Records. Booker T. & the MG's turned an already hip record into one that was funky as hell, and one that kept listeners guessing by rearranging the order of the tunes to suit the MG's as a band. The set begins with a medley of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End/Here Comes the Sun/Come Together." The juxtaposition of the first two cuts is jarring but seamless. The quartet nails "The End," with fine soloing from Cropper and heated work from Jones on organ and electric piano, before a crescendo and a Moog intros "Here Comes the Sun," done as a summery Jimmy Smith-styled jazz number before turning all sinister on "Come Together." "Something" may have seemed a curious choice for a single, but with Cropper's greasy, bluesy guitar break and Jones playing his organ rhythmically more than melodically, it works beautifully. "Because," wedded to "You Never Give Me Your Money," is a spacious blend of melody and psychedelic groove, setting up the final medley. It is the set's tour de force, commencing with a shimmering "Sun King," before Jackson's drums announce a sprightly, funky "Mean Mr. Mustard" that careens into the guitar overdrive of "Polythene Pam" and the breezy "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," which morphs into a dramatic, blues-drenched, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" to close it out. Not only is McLemore Avenue a stellar interpretation of Abbey Road, it's one of the finest Booker T. & the MG's albums to boot.

This is another aberration in the entire Booker T & the MGs output: not only a concept album, nor merely an album of covers by other artists, but the entire album by the Beatles - song for song, track for track - the entire Beatles 'Abbey Road' album reenacted, delivered in the classic Booker T. funky/groovy manner. This is the entire Abbey Road album, carefully and lovingly recreated (down to the spoof of the "street crossing" scene on the cover - you'll have wild fun time picking up the similarities between the two covers). Despite the fact that the critics badly mangled this album when it came out, the time has been very gentle on it and it aged gracefully: some of the most beautiful playing by Booker T - particularly on the ballads - can be found here. The general opinion of this album has changed so dramatically since its release in 1969 that it is now considered one of the very finest BTMGs works ever. The vinyl version sounds light years better than the lousy, shoddy Fantasy CD remastering done in the stone age of digital technology, and good luck finding an original copy of the original album. This album induced George Benson to come up with his own version of "Abbey Road" some time later (alas, nowhere near as good). Track listing is…(WHAT? You don't know the Abbey Road track listing?!?. Twenty lashes with a dry noodle, and go stand in the corner,  subito!!!)… Medley: Golden slumbers/Carry that weight/The End/Here comes the Sun/Come together - Something - (Medley): Because/You never give me your money - (Medley) - Sun King - Mean Mr.Mustard - Polythene Pam - She came in through the bathroom window - I want her - She's so heavy.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
