All three of Booker T and Mgs first albums are all good instrumental r&b and this one (#3) has some of their best tracks like "Jericho" and "No Matter What Shape". Even a piece with Booker on piano called "My Sweet Potato". Some good covers as well like "Summertime" and "Sentimental Journey". Only low point is yet another "Green Onions" re-write in "One Mint Julep" and even that has a cool guitar part. Solid as a rock.

The arrival of Duck, an influx of funk, and the most thought-out material yet, all rolled up into one package. While the presence of another "Green Onions" rip-off proves the band is still human, the devastating precision in groove ("Jericho"), atmosphere ("Summertime"), and class ("Soul Jam") is major cause for doubt.

Simply the greatest Booker T & the MGs album ever recorded, at the very pinnacle of their fame & stature, while they were touring Europe with the Stax/Volt Soul Revue and Otis Redding and being showered with love and admiration by the throngs of the worshipping Europeans. This album demonstrates the evolution of the band from the Stax house band that played covers and originals, to a veritable jazz/funk/fusion powerhouse. "Soul Jam" on side 2 must be the first true jazz/rock fusion in history, way before Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra and others attempted the same shtick. Still, the band covers a few tracks by other artists, such as Ray Charles, George & Ira Gershwin, James Brown and Lee Dorsey. Track listing: My sweet potato - Jericho - No matter what shape - One mint julep - In the midnight hour - Summertime - Working in the coal mine - Don't mess up the good thing - Think - Taboo - Soul Jam - Sentimental Journey.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has some writing on its front side (name of the previous owner written in faded green marker, about 1 x 1 inches in size)

-       Front cover has a small day-glo price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-       Back cover has a microscopic peel-off mark in one corner (less than 1/16th square inch in size)

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)
