("SHE" -- THE ORIGINAL VERSION BY BOOKER T. JONES & PRISCILLA COOLIDGE, RELEASED IN 1971)
Booker T. Jones exited Stax Records before it came to a complete crash and married singer Priscilla Coolidge, Rita's sister, and the two hooked-up musically as well. Great things were expected from this project. Jones led his namesake, Booker T. & the MG's, to some success at Stax. The four-pieces also served as the label's most prominent house band, and, in addition, Jones shared co-writer credit on some great songs. Coolidge, like her sister, sang with an abundance of soul. Rita recorded for A&M, and the label had issued a solo album on Priscilla, which originally came out on Sussex Records. The lovebirds are all over the place theme-wise -- love, social problems, ethnic issues, and other twists and spins on a multitude of subjects. Nice singing, good tracks, but nothing to get up and boogie about. You keep waiting for the blockbuster that never comes. It attracted some buyers, charting at number 106 on Billboard's Top 200 Pop Albums, mainly out of curiosity.

("SHE" -- THE VERSION BY IT'S AUTHOR, GRAM PARSONS, RELEASED IN 1973)
After two albums and no commercial return, and with his dissatisfaction with his bandmates growing (he “was less of a team player than had once been supposed”, Barney Hoskyns remarks drily in his book, Waiting for the Sun), Gram Parsons decamped again. This time, his trust fund shoring him up, he pretty much spent two years hanging around with the Stones (at one point, the future Hank Wangford, Dr Sam Hutt, was his physician in London). In mid 1972, he re-emerged with a deal with Reprise and a plan to get Merle Haggard to produce his first solo album. Haggard, though, was a conservative and had no interest in working with a druggy longhair. Who knows what might have been? Instead, Traffic’s Ric Grech took control, Emmylou Harris joined up to sing harmony and Parsons set about making the first of the two albums that are the centrepiece of his catalogue: GP, released early in 1973. She was another of the weeping ballads that seem to be pitched in some impossible-to-pinpoint time when the past and future come together in the cotton fields: “She, she worked and she slaved so hard / A big old field was her back yard in the delta sun / Ah, but she sure could sing, ooh, she sure could sing.” It’s tempting to wonder if the Stones took their equally non time-and-place specific approach to country songwriting from Parsons.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER; THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.
While this acetate is in a BEAUTIFUL state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.
This acetate is in about VERY GOOD ++ (VG++) condition, with some minor, superficial scuffs. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.
ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 7.5 TO 8

· COVER : This acetate comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a stock Irving Music sleeve (not separately graded, but in a very nice condition overall)
