From the opening notes of its blistering title track, Booker Ervin proclaims this album's mission statement confidently and clearly: it is going to stake out the space in between Hard Bop and the Avant Garde with layered, complex compositions that will push the boundaries of the former without sacrificing melodic phrasing or conceding to the dissonance often found in the latter. This philosophy comes even more to the fore on the second track, "The Muse", which starts off in an abstract, meandering fashion before exploding into a fiery rave-up, punctuated by a series of notes from Williams that almost sound like laughter, as if taking delight in how the song's sudden shift in tone might have confounded the listener, before fading into the esoteric again at the end. From there, we get the set's two most purely Hard Bop tracks, "Mour" and "Sweet Pea", although the former once again aims to surprise, coming in conventionally before progressing into a series of increasingly intricate solos from Ervin and modal playing by Few on the piano. "Largo", the album's lone ballad, is at first blush a spare affair, playing out as an extended bluesy lament by Ervin, that is until one catches on to the rather complex counterpoints being laid down by the rhythm section. The closing track, "Tyra", is my personal favorite, with its slinky groove, haunting horn and piano lines, and subtly knotted playing from Jeffries and McBrowne. The last full album Ervin recorded and released before his untimely death from kidney disease in 1970 at age 39, "The In Between" is Booker Ervin's masterpiece, a fitting coda to his body of work that will inspire the listener to ponder in what direction he would have gone next.

(b)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A faint mold stain (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY) affects the area about 6 square inches in size in one bottom corner; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some chalky mold stains and a slight warp in the affected area. We are certain that the chalky residue can be easily wiped off once the shrink wrap has been removed.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel (a minor cover construction flaw)
