VERY RARE TEST PRESSING FOR MARLEY'S CLASSIC FROM 1974, "NATTY DREAD". THIS APPEARS TO BE A UK TEST PRESSING, IDENTIFIABLE BY THE BEAUTIFUL, HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL ON WHICH IT'S PRESSED. LIKE MANY TEST PRESSINGS, IT COMES IN A BLANK WHITE COVER WITH A SMALL STICKER IDENTIFYING ITS CATALOG NUMBER. VINYL IS AN INCREDIBLE MINT MINUS, IT GLISTENS, AND SOUNDS PHENOMENAL!!
TEST PRESSINGS ARE, BY DEFINITION, VERY RARE. THEY ARE PRESSED IN VERY LIMITED NUMBERS AND ARE ONLY DISTRIBUTED TO INDUSTRY EXECS, MUSIC REVIEWERS AND MUSIC INSIDERS. THEY PREDATE THE ISSUING OF THE COMMERCIAL VERSION AND SOMETIMES CONTAIN ALTERNATE VERSIONS OF SONGS OR HAVE DIFFERENT TRACK LISTINGS.

Natty Dread is Bob Marley's finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time. This was Marley's first album without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, and the first released as Bob Marley & the Wailers. The Wailers' rhythm section of bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and drummer Carlton "Carlie" Barrett remained in place and even contributed to the songwriting, while Marley added a female vocal trio, the I-Threes (which included his wife Rita Marley), and additional instrumentation to flesh out the sound. The material presented here defines what reggae was originally all about, with political and social commentary mixed with religious paeans to Jah. The celebratory "Lively Up Yourself" falls in the same vein as "Get Up, Stand Up" from Burnin'. "No Woman, No Cry" is one of the band's best-known ballads. "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" is a powerful warning that "a hungry mob is an angry mob." "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block)" and "Revolution" continue in that spirit, as Marley assumes the mantle of prophet abandoned by '60s forebears like Bob Dylan. In addition to the lyrical strengths, the music itself is full of emotion and playfulness, with the players locked into a solid groove on each number. Considering that popular rock music was entering the somnambulant disco era as Natty Dread was released, the lyrical and musical potency is especially striking. Marley was taking on discrimination, greed, poverty, and hopelessness while simultaneously rallying the troops as no other musical performer was attempting to do in the mid-'70s.

RECORD GRADING POLICY

MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale

EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play

VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play

VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.

VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.

VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.

Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like

Fair = you are getting this record just to own but not to play

Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest

We ship all LP's in new (unused) custom LP mailers. We pack records with filler pads, placing the disc in an inner sleeve outside the cover to prevent seam splitting in transit. Part of our postage fee covers the cost of the mailer and pads (which currently costs us up to a dollar per).
