Recorded in Jamaica from 1968 through 1972, prior to the Wailers' worldwide success on Island Records, CHANCES ARE consists entirely of previously unreleased recordings unearthed after Bob Marley's death in 1981. One of Marley's cronies during this period was early Jamaican superstar Johnny Nash (whose "I Can See Clearly Now" was an enormous worldwide hit during this period), and this collection shows something of an influence from Nash. As a whole, these songs are less intensely rhythmic and are lighter in mood than the songs which brought Marley international acclaim just a few years later. Even classics like "Soul Rebel" and "Reggae On Broadway" sound smoother and more pop-oriented in these early versions. CHANCES ARE is a fascinating glimpse into the under-documented period between the Wailers' early ska success and their mid-'70s mainstream breakthrough.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

OK, folks, to summarize: this is a  mythically rare , heretofore unknown, never-heard and never-seen ACETATE version of the Bob Marley and the Wailers first posthumous release from 1981, released by Atlantic album just immediately following Marley's death and containing some of Marley's primo material from 1964-1967. What makes this acetate so unbelievably rare is the inclusion of one unreleased track, which was omitted from the 1981 Atlantic release ("Lon'some Feeling", clocking in at 3:43).  Why people at Atlantic had decided to omit this particular track mere days before the album's official release is anyone's guess.

For additional historical information on this album, including track listing of the COMMERCIALLY RELEASED version (not this acetate) ►CLICK HERE

IMPORTANT NOTE: While this acetate is in a very nice state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability.

This acetate is in GORGEOUS  NEAR MINT (NM)  condition, with a few minor, superficial scuffs on the surface. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 9

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.  This acetate will be shipped in its original, plain, generic, white cardboard cover with a Masterdisk sticker on it and no other markings whatsoever(NOT SEPARATELY GRADED but in a fairly decebt condition overall)
