An ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY ESSENTIAL album in any serious Bob Dylan collection: In 1961 Bob Dylan made a cameo appearance on an album recorded by Victoria Spivey, legendary blues piano-pounder, along with the three other blues greats: Roosevelt Sykes, Big Joe Williams and (my favorite bluesman) Lonnie Johnson. Bob Dylan sings and/or plays mouth harp on two tracks, both by Big Joe Williams ('Sitting on top of the world' and 'Wichita'.). This is one of the first, possibly THE  first Bob Dylan appearance on the record. Like most early white blues troubadours of the Greenwich Village folk renaissance of the early 60's, Bob Dylan considered himself - among other things - a BLUES artist, and the extent to which he was immersed in black music is absolutely unmistakable here. Both his sense of phrasing, and his muted harmonica playing is undeniably a remnant of the times when he was listening to Delta Blues 24 hours a day. My favorite song on the album: No doubt, Victoria Spivey's 'Turpentine' on which she sings solo, backing herself only on pipe organ. The result is positively bizarre and unlike any blues songs you have heard before or since: she sounds more like a mad organ grinder, than like a classic blues singer. Track listing: This is a New World (Roosevelt Sykes) - Mr. Johnson's guitar talks (Lonnie Johnson) - Sitting on top of the world (Big Joe Williams with Bob Dylan) - All you men (Victoria Spivey) - Lake Charles Stomp (Roosevelt Sykes) - Strange Girl Blues (Big Joe Williams) - Stick by me baby (Lonnie Johnson) - Turpentine (Victoria Spivey) - Let's play mommie and daddy (Roosevelt Sykes) - Wichita (Big Joe Williams with Bob Dylan) - Brown Skin (Victoria Spivey) - Stop Talking (Lonnie Johnson) - No Partnership Woman (Big Joe Williams) - Blues for Robert Calvin # 2 (Victoria Spivey) - Four Shots of Gin (Lonnie Johnson) - Thirteen Hours (Victoria Spivey and Roosevelt Sykes). Bob Dylan is not known to have made many cameo appearances on other artists recordings early on in his career: This record; The Belafonte collaboration in 1961; the Carolyn Hester's first solo album; Richard Farina’s 1963 UK-only solo album; a few Newport Folk Festival live sets, Steve Goodman album, George Harrison’s Bangladesh concert (did we miss anything?) and that's pretty much about it. To the best of knowledge, this is the only way to obtain these two rare Dylan appearances; they do not appear to have been issued on compact disc or, for that matter, anywhere else. Don't miss out on this great Bob Dylan artifact.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
