A tossed-off vibe, a complete lack of focus and continuity, and poor fidelity: doesn't sound like a recipe for a rock-era touchstone, does it? Yet these elements are exactly what give The Basement Tapes its considerable charm. Recorded in the summer of 1967 at the "Big Pink" house near Woodstock, N.Y., this set captures Dylan and The Band woodshedding, bouncing ideas off the walls and each other. Steeped in traditional American roots music, these 24 tracks have the feel of a laid-back song swap. Though many of the tracks here are silly, sarcastic, or just downright weird, some display an elegance, beauty, and gravity that add much-needed balance. Songs like "Tears of Rage," "This Wheel's on Fire," and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" would later become beloved classics, but even the lesser-known cuts ("Bessie Smith," "Katie's Been Gone") here are stirring and memorable.

This is one of those albums that needs to be listened to multiple times to gain appreciation but once you get it, you realize what a masterpiece it is. The spontaneity, the humor, the effortless collaboration makes this collection (which was never meant to be released) a true masterpiece and so unique. The highlights to me are some of the lesser known tracks such as Lo and Behold , Please Mrs. Henry, Tiny Montgomery and especially Open the Door Homer. if you've never listened, listen, if you've listened once or twice, listen ten more times more, then you will truly understand what I mean.

“Invisible Republic” Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes’ by Greil Marcus, is a book about the creation and cultural importance of The Basement Tapes, a series of recordings made by Bob Dylan in 1967 in collaboration with musicians who would subsequently be known as The Band.
Marcus quotes Robbie Robertson’s memories of recording the Basement Tapes: "Dylan would pull these songs out of nowhere. We didn’t know if he wrote them or if he remembered them. When he sang them, you couldn’t tell." Marcus called these songs "palavers with a community of ghosts." . He suggests that "these ghosts were not abstractions. As native sons and daughters they were a community. And they were once gathered in a single place: on the ?Anthology of American Folk Music,, a work produced by a 29-year-old of no fixed address named Harry Smith." Marcus argues Dylan’s Basement Songs were a resurrection of the spirit of Smith’s Anthology, originally published by Folkways Records in 1952, a collection of blues and country songs recorded in the 1920s and 1930s, which proved very influential in the folk music revival of the 1950s and the 1960s.
Marcus links the First Great Awakening, the folk music revival of the 1950s, with Bob Dylan's 1966 tour with The Hawks aka The Band, the Civil Rights Movement, and the history of coal strikes in West Virginia.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The records are pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl either.
(c) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
