Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with around only a small few – 4 or 5 – mainly light spindle marks. This lovely early stereo copy appears only very lightly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. One of the heavier copies of this album I have held.

Rarity: Moderately scarce as an early UK stereo. Also this includes the quite rare cover that has the red ‘STEREO’ logo printed on the back as seen in my close-up picture.

Brief Info: Another brilliant album, his eighth, issued around 18 months after the masterpiece that was ‘Blonde on Blonde’. It was issued in both mono and stereo, and this the first I have had with the red stereo printed cover – many early copies had the gold stereo sticker. Between times he has been recovering from a major motorcycle accident and quite how the man could follow the previous album with something almost as good was an incredible achievement. With sparse instrumentation and totally wonderful songs, this stands high in his impressively long catalogue. It includes the classic ‘All Along the Watchtower’, soon to be covered by Jimi Hendrix on the ‘Electric Ladyland’ double set.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front lamination that covers all the edge folds and ending on the back via the spine. The back is unprotected, matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group and is a rare REAL stereo printed cover with the red overprint as seen on the back near the top. Also included is the CBS orange promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate is shiny and very clear and fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. It has not lifting with only a few light surface creases and only quite gentle dulling seen under angled light. Overall, aged little with the graphic retaining deep colour and all looking impressive.

Cover Back: Unprotected and more prone to wear, this has little. A light mark towards the right edge and a little darkening of the end-of-laminate line near the spine. Clean and still fresh looking with no ring wear and hardly any creasing. A tiny 15/- is seen in neat pencil near the top left corner – that is 75 pence in decimal money – this will rub out if desired, but personally, I like to see the original pre-decimal retail prices on covers. A very fine back to match the equally nice front.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both show hardly any wear and are quite straight, the laminate solid, very smooth with no scuffs to the fingertips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening as seen viewed end-on, only very slight. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically as made: solid, straight with barely any compression – the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains fresh and crystal clear.

Corners: All quite neat with littl wear, the odd gentle tip crease apart, with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this rarer red stereo overprinted cover. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an impressive example of this famous CBS inner gives only gentle clues to it’s great age. A real fresh looking vintage unlined promotional inner that will seldom be found a great deal better. The window circles are pristine and all edges are unsplit (with no repairs). Any creasing very light and only a little darkening of the seam areas seen on the back. Even the recessed and shaped top opening is quite crisp and neat, all strong indicators the record has made few trips out.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and maybe even harsh at that. a lovely visual record that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are few, light and faint with critical viewing under bright angled light. How many records this great age will have zero marks if scrutinised closely enough? - let’s be honest. No penetrating scratches and all indicates very little usage. This attractive record should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early stereo record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. All the songs play beautifully with little at all unwanted. The odd sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid on the quieter albums, remember this is well into it’s forties now, how many will ever play without the odd gentle reminder what you actually listening too? Without any doubt a record that has avoided all the perils of blunt, chipped piledriver stylus from the distant past. This has the sheen and lustre of a very little handled record and so few still do. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and this one will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
