Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good weight for this record.

Brief Info: The world’s most famous folk-poet’s second album originally issued way back in 1963. Without doubt one of his greatest and most powerful acoustic albums, now including all original material bar two songs. The girl on the cover was his then girlfriend, Suze Rotolo. This early-pressed copy with the textured labels and 33 speed indicator in stereo are far more elusive as this was the era of the mono record and a far higher percentage of them were purchased in the single channel mode. A very find all-round copy, the cover mildly aged with the odd minor blemish or two and a fully intact CBS promotional inner. Not an absolute first issue, but still very early indeed and most Dylans fans will enjoy this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-), near Excellent. A single format with front laminate. The wraps the top and bottom folds but not the spine or back panel and ends well short of full width left and right. This means the spine is exposed and vulnerable putting the text as risk of rubbing, but little here. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day with the ‘Patent Pending’ text and the red ‘STEREO’ over print on the back near the top edge.

Lamination & Front: The front shows little wear and looks really strong and I consider just right for it’s considerable vintage. With fully adhered laminate that retains a super shine, freshness and clarity, the only issue are a few small surface creases, mostly fine edge hairlines and a few half moons near the right edge that have little visual impact especially with normal viewing. With few surface marks at all and any friction rubs or dulling being ultra fine and faint, this famous Dylan front cover will take a fair amount of beating. The two exposed strips left and right are largely clean and unworn bar a small rub/chip to the top left corner.

Cover Back: The fully exposed back does give a few more clues to it’s age, but as I have said before, many actually tell me they want to reminded of the fact with a little natural ageing and not pristine like a brand new cover. Everyone has their own opinions and I respect them all. This back as lightly darkened with mild toning around the sides with a few very small and most barely noticeable tone spots. Just one mild and small corner semi-crease and barely any rubbing and no ringwear. The most curious blemish I think is the original owner has put a few small pen characters that look like music notation next three tracks that means nothing to me. Neat and almost small enough not to even draw the eye’s attention but present nonetheless. A more than respectable back for a cover like this.

Top Edge: Little wear even with the back panel a tiny fraction high. This has not burred and any thickening very slight indeed.

Bottom Edge: Little wear again, just a rub-chip to the right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with little wear, no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression but not too thick on manufacture. This one has no laminate protection, hence few will survive unscathed. The fact that some text is centred a little low means it has larely avoided rubbing and erosion with just tiny clipping to the ‘DY’ in ‘DYLAN’ and a nick on the second ‘B’ in ‘BOB’. The rest is present and unworn. The overall whiteness is now darkened but not to any major extent. Believe me, many of these spines will offer no text at all.

Corners: A rub to the top left and bottom right, the other two are have little to fault. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this famous 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better as an early-made Ernest J. Day example with red stereo logo. This still attractive item, particularly the front, should please many collectors but clearly not the most highly discerning as the grading suggests.

The Inner Sleeve: The orange unlined promotional inner has survived fully intact, including the edges. The window is immaculate and the only blemish of any note is a small crinkle-crease on the bottom left corner. This has aged little at all and is very clean and attractive with any marks few and ultra faint.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: I cannot grade this lovely looking and lightly played record less than Excellent. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by lovely clean sound. Just very light surface marks seen under bright light that have no effect no sound and visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful CBS record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing of any note to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks or any significance were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a totally acoustic album. With no loud passages for any blemishes to hide, a top pressing and lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure and this easily makes the grade. Few copies will outperform this heavy textured label pressing significantly I feel sure. So clear, focused and sharp, the man himself could almost be in the room with you. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and overall, has been well looked after. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. For those who want an early pressed stereo copy of this legendary record and do not care if it’s an ultimate first issue and looks brand new, but sounds marvellous and clean, this is for you. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
