Label/Format: CBS - Early intense orange format with textured surfaces and the first 33 speed indicator. This was soon changed to the ore traditional 33 1/3. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in lovely condition and bare in mind the age of the vintage mono record. Very clean, fresh and highly attractive with spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate and even less on side two. These being fine and faint. A record played a few times for sure, but with the utmost care – that makes the real difference.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A fairly typical solid pressing for this album.

Rarity: The early mono copies are a little easier to find compared to the stereo, but finding them in such fine condition much harder.

<Brief Artist & Album Info: Dylans first studio album that featured an ‘electric’ backing band, a groundbreaking moment and this title (for me anyway) is one of the very best albums he ever made, it started a chain reaction of brilliance that was maintained throughout all his 60s records. Beautifully packaged in one of the greatest 60s sleeves too, this scarce, early mono copy is a delight to view, hold and hear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three large rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the original CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This looks superb with little to fault. The laminate clean, fresh and clear with a lovely shine. Just three fine half moon surface creases that show little and fully adhered with no lifts or blisters. Even under light, barely any traces of dulling and this classic Dylan cover sets the bar very high.

Cover Back: The back has aged little and any grubbiness or blemishes are tiny and faint. One fairly light crease on the bottom left corner and one small, minor burr the bottom flipback end just right of centre. That apart, all the flipbacks are in super shape with no damage, lifting or wear. The ends ungrubbied, crisp and sharp bar the one small burr. Overall, an impressive and attractive, little aged back that gives few clues to it’s impressive age.

Top Edge: A tiny rub hint in the very centre, but look very hard. Not dead straight but practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Again, no real wear but barely any hint of real wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, thickening or burring. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that remains fully laminated. Solid, straight, uncompressed and clean. All text is perfect and unworn and superbly centred under the totally unscuffed or aged laminate.

Corners: A tiny tip crease on the front right – on the one that has the rear creasing mentioned above. That apart little else to fault and all retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this classic 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and this being ultra critical, by highest Mint(-) grading really could apply. Thin unlined paper and delicate, few are seen unsplit as per this and it has NO repairs and barely any creasing. Hardly aged at all in fact and this vintage inner, that always adds much to any album set, will also prove hard to find much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this again hardly does this very well preserved mono record full justice. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest and carefull plays on all the evidence with any surface marks of blemishes very small and faint as mostly seen critically under bright angled light. No vintage heavyweight old stylus have damaged or impaired this quality record. Visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb early mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little and no pops or clicks of any significance were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for an album of this type. With fewer louder passages for any blemishes to hide, a top pressing and carefully played record is essential for maximum pleasure and this easily makes the grade. Few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Major sound degrading on popular mono records is common, but this has little at all and this being played on a highly revealing LP12 front end. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played with care and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. For those who want an early mono copy of this legendary set this will take a fair degree of beating. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
