Unbelievable though it may sound, in his 40-odd year career, Bob Dylan only had one - and one alone -  career-spanning anthology (various Greatest Hits-type compilations notwithstanding): this great 5-LP box set which came out in 1985 and included a cornucopia of rare and unreleased material. This is an unbelievably competent and inspired compilation starting with early Columbia demos and alternate takes, taking listener on through the years of folk/electric upheaval, peak years of Dylan career, silent waters of the early 1970's to the early 1980's. With the possible exception of material from "Mercy!" and "Time out of Mind" everything you always wanted to have by Bobby Dylan (but were afraid to ask for) is here! If there is a weakness to the set, it is that Dylan’s side projects as a session musician or co-player (with Carolyn Hester; Victoria Spivey; Harry Belafonte; Richard Farina; Eric Anderson; The Band; Dave Bromberg; Eric Clapton;  Doug Sahm; George Harrison; Joan Baez or Jim McGuinn, Eric Von Schmidt, and others) are not included among the “proper” songs; but this would probably have required legal clearance from at least 10 other labels and inevitably complicated and delayed the entire project.

The album was lovingly compiled and assembled by Bruce Dickinson, Bob Dylan’s Product Manager at Columbia at the time and Jeff Rosen from Bob Dylan’s office (Bruce also happens to be our good friend and our occasional customer).

Essentially, ‘Biograph’ was Bruce Dickinson’s brainchild which was initiated in 1981,  four years before its eventual release.  In 1981, Bob Dylan had just issued the second of two albums (Saved and Shot Of Love) that just didn't even come close to meeting the expected billing needs of Columbia, to put it nicely.  Bruce was asked by the powers that be at Columbia at the time to start getting a Greatest Hits Vol. 3 together to make up for the "lost" income. He had a better idea, however:  one that he felt that would help Dylan's career and rejuvenate interest in his ENTIRE catalog. He also felt that one particular song from Shot Of Love (“Every Grain Of Sand”) was one of the best songs that Dylan had ever written and that no one was going to get to hear it because virtually no one was buying the album. Bruce wanted to spotlight that song and others, including great songs on Dylan's hugely successful albums that had been somewhat overshadowed by the CLASSIC songs. Also, he knew that there was a wealth of great unreleased material, outtakes that were often even better than some of the released tracks. Being a huge Dylan fan, our friend wanted justice, not some cheesy hits package, which - although Columbia could have put a lot of great songs on it - wouldn't have fit the definition of a “hit”.  Biograph was a bigger, better, and more important idea. Greatest Hits Vol. 3 could, and did, come later, but first, Bob Dylan’s career needed to be put in perspective. Dylans office agreed, especially in the person of Jeff Rosen, who oversaw the production work and who deserves a special credit for making this incredible package possible. Bruce took his concept Jeff, who was quite enthusiastic and supportive (a rare occurrence in recording industry). They then worked on the formatting, themes for each side (the whole set focuses on groups or songs, or thematic album sides), picking the specific songs together and, finally, Bruce literally sequenced it all in his head while walking home one night.

For his involvement in the project, Bruce and Jeff received a special “Thank-You” note from Bob Dylan himself.  It should be added that Bob Dylan had DIRECT and PERSONAL involvement in approving the songs selected for this box set: he approved each and every one of Bruce’s and Jeff’s selections with one notable exception: Bob did not want to see the great 1966 live version of “Like a Rolling Stone” recorded in Manchester during the legendary UK tour included in this career-spanning anthology. We can only speculate that 1965/66 was a very tough year for him and that he had bad memories of this particular performance. No matter: the track was eventually released as part of the phenomenal 2000 Sony/Columbia 2-CD set: Bob Dylan Live 1966.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.
