Description
Here we have x 6 professionally bound volumes of BLUES UNLIMITED, the first english language blues magazine and the best of them all. From issue number 1 (April 1963) to issue number 127(December 1977) these 6 volumes are in superb condition and are a essential reference document for any blues archive or individual. Possibly unique in this form.
Great writing from the likes of Bruce Bastin, John Broven, Marcel Chauvard, Don Kent, Bob Koester,Mike Leadbitter, Pete Lowry, Rick Milne, Simon Napier, Paul Oliver, Neil Patterson, Mike Rowe, Francis Wilford-Smith, Dick Spottswood, Chris Strachwitz, Gayle Dean Wardlow, Pete Welding and many many others. Packed with photographs both familiar and unfamiliar, discographies, interviews, reviews, letters and, above all, ENTHUSIASM. Much of this was groundbreaking work making it essential reading. It is important to stress that this magazine began at a time when many of the early greats were being "rediscovered", the likes of Bukka White, Son House, Big Joe Williams, Skip James, Henry Brown, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Wilkins and others more obscure, all covered in detail. Also, the contemporary singers like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, BB King and Howlin' Wolf still had their original audience and were not simply playing music called "blues" to college audiences - this was the real thing and was reflected in the magazine.
Also bound in the volumes are a series of "Collectors Classics" on Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry & Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Homesick James, Texas Blues, and Son House, together with a survey of currently available blues on EP and LP. There are also auction lists and items for sale.
The overall condition is superb. However, there are penned notations on a few of the discographical pages in some of the early issues, all of which are pertinent to the text. There are also a couple of covers with mild coffee or tea-stain rings from a cup or mug. It must be stressed that these were bound AT THE TIME so apart from the odd crease from the original magazine being mailed in the post these are very clean and tight. They are professionally bound in solid encyclopaedia-like covers with gold tooling on the spines, NOT ring bound or punched.
