I loved this band, and saw them live from their early days on Private Stock Records. And I was so happy when they finally got their first hit with this album.
Then I bought it again...because...I mean if you're going to have an original pressing of this album, you surely might want this adorable picture disc.
The main thing is--maybe their best album, and maybe my favorite picture disc. I love that folks are still listening to these guys.
I don't know what the situation is now, but back in the 70's there was a general feeling that picture discs didn't sound as good as black vinyl. Supposedly it was because black vinyl contained an opaque lubricating element that can't be included in the clear vinyl you need to use for a picture disc...at least that was the rumor.
To corroborate this, there's a tiny disclaimer on the back of this sleeve, that says "Sound quality may not be comparable to conventional edition."
But to confuse matters, the record specialist website Discogs has a discussion stating my own opinion, that this is a great-sounding pressing. They do say that there are two versions of this item--one with a clear rim, and one with a black rim, and that the black rim version was not good sounding at all. Perhaps that led them to include the disclaimer--but meanwhile somebody at the pressing plant solved the problem, and the clear-rim version (which we have here) is really nice.
Anyway, my normal black-vinyl version didn't sound any better than this one.
I will say that there's a soft steady vinyl whoosh throughout Side 2, that I can only hear on Stax headphones. It's not going to bother you or be audible during the music, but I like to mention everything. There's also a few ticks audible on Side 1 Cut 5...hence NM-.
