Description
Black Sabbath’s third abum from 1971, ‘Master Of Reality’ on the VERTIGO SWIRL label, catalogue number 6360 050. First press matrices are 1Y // 1 and 2 // Y1. This record had a slightly more positive lyrical approach than the rather immature ’Satanic’ stance the band had adopted on the previous two albums. Kicking off with Ozzie’s ode to the weed, ‘Sweet Leaf’ slams in with the usual sledgehammer riffery from Iommi and Butler. This FIRST UK PRESSING has so much more weight to the sound than the weak re-issues on other labels !! Showing that more positive approach, ‘After Forever’ fades in with a swirling synth before Iommi and Butler fire off another stomping classic Sabbath riff. This song contains the immortal, “ Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope” line. Probably only slightly less memorable than “ Generals gathered in their masses……..” !! The rollicking live favourite ‘Children Of The Grave’ is up next. Powered along by Bill Ward’s thundering drums it just shudders out of the speakers at you with tremendous power !! Side two opens with the delicately melodic Tony Iommi guitar composition ‘Orchid’. But its only a short interlude to the detuned groove of ‘Lord Of This World’, with Ozzie lambasting the Luciferian rulers of Planet Earth. The lovely ballad ‘Solitude’ follows with its beautiful melodies and dreamy flutes (yes, flutes !). Ozzie showing great sensitivity with a wonderfully fluid vocal. Once again its only the calm before the storm and ‘Into The Void’ announces itself with a crunching guitar stab from Iommi that rips into yet another classic Sabbath epic !! Ozzie once again bemoaning the state of Planet Earth and the search for a better world. A fantastic album that still sounds SO HEAVY !! Amazing stuff !! The vinyl is in UNMISTAKABLE NEAR MINT condition ! It is in COMPLETELY UNMARKED, PRISTINE CONDITION ! The audio reproduction is JUST STUNNING ! NO GROOVE WEAR OR DISTORTION, just that awesome Sabbath sound as only these FIRST UK VERTIGO pressings have. The box sleeve is in EXCELLENT++ condition. It is unquestionably the best I have seen ! Usually, all these box type covers are completely flattened with severe laminate lifting and many cracks and creases around the edges. Not this one ! It has only light laminate lifting and creases in a very few places. The record comes in its ORIGINAL BLACK SWIRL inner sleeve (later copies have the more usual white swirl inner) and is in EXCELLENT CONDITION with only some creasing which easily be ironed out. All in all, a SUPERB EXAMPLE of this classic Black Sabbath album. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED !!
