The jazz world is infamous for having a lot of narrow-minded snobs who could care less about other forms of music -- myopic individuals who wouldn't know Marvin Gaye from the Sex Pistols or Joan Baez from Joan Jett. The late Billy Butler, however, wasn't one of them; he was a versatile, flexible, broad-minded guitarist whose taste in music ran from hard bop to soul, funk, and the blues. Produced by Bob Porter in 1969, Guitar Soul reflects Butler's diversity. Parts of this album are straight-ahead, hard-swinging bop; his interpretations of Wes Montgomery's "The Thumb" and Benny Goodman's "Seven Come Eleven" certainly fit that description. But the nine-minute "Blow for the Crossing" is another matter; this gem (which Butler co-wrote with his nephew, Charles Black) boasts an infectious New Orleans-style funk groove -- it's exactly the sort of thing that the Meters would have recorded in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Equally groove-oriented and equally memorable is a performance of Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk," the tune that Butler is best remembered for. To his credit, the Philadelphian doesn't try to turn this 1969 remake of "Honky Tonk" into a carbon copy of the famous 1956 version -- he knows better, and the "Honky Tonk" found on Guitar Soul has a magic of its own. Meanwhile, "B&B Calypso" is a Caribbean-flavored gem that is influenced by Sonny Rollins' jazz/calypso experiments, and was written by Bob Bushnell, who is employed on electric bass. Butler's other sidemen on this LP include saxman Seldon Powell, organist Sonny Phillips, and drummer Specs Powell, all of whom do their part to make Guitar Soul the creative triumph that it is.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-        A visible water stain affects the area about 9 square inches on the back panel  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) ; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is faintly visible

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the opening edge

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
