BILL DIXON - COLLECTION: MUSIC FOR SOLO TRUMPET

1985 US Cadence  2xLP Box Set      CJR 1024 / 25      Stereo

Limited edition box set #87/500 including booklet and errata slip. The sticker seal on the box is signed by Bill Dixon and producer Bob Rusch. The booklet includes many examples of Dixon's drawings and a lengthy essay by him. 

Dixon was a noted free jazz composer, musician, artist and educator, who died last year.  He founded the Jazz Composers Guild (with Sun Ra) and recorded/performed with the cream of the free jazz avant-garde, including Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Alan Silva, William Parker and Byard Lancaster.

Cadence's CD reissue in 2000 allegedly was not authorised by Dixon and caused some controversy between him and Rusch. This however is the authorised and hard to find original vinyl release, an unopened copy of which sold earlier this year for $272!

Looks barely played and the whole package remains in very nice condition considering it is over 25 years old - but there are some small pressing glitches in the vinyl (to which Cadence releases appear to be particularly prone) - please see detailed grading below:-

RECORD 1 - Side 1 is NM-   Full lustre. No scratches. A couple of very small (2mm) light non-sounding surface marks. 

                   Side 2 is NM-   Looks NM but a shallow pressing dimple causes a few dull and barely audible background pulses.

RECORD 2 - Side 1 is VG+   Looks NM but a single pinhead-sized pressing glitch (or possibly it is a needle drop scratch) causes 5 prominent clicks.

                   Side 2 is VG+   Looks NM but a couple of pinhead-sized pressing pimples/glitches each cause three or four loud clicks and I heard another loud click in the same area.

[I have play tested both records right through and, apart from the flaws specifically mentioned above, they play beautifully (with just a hint of light background static/crackle, which is slightly more prominent for some reason at the beginning of record 2)]

LABELS -  NM-   No spindle marks. Light wear around spindle hole on side 1 and lightest blistering on side 2 labels of record 1.

BOX -  EX+   Very solid. No splits. A couple of light thumbprint-sized smudges on front artwork. Dinged/worn/creased on back edge of spine (see fourth picture) and a small nick on front edge (fifth picture).

BOOKLET - NM-

INNER SLEEVES - NM-   No splits. A bit wrinkled. One edge of one of the sleeves has come completely unglued.

GRADING SCALE:   M/NM/EX/VG/G(+/-) visual grading - not play tested unless specifically indicated above. NM is near mint not mint - I do not use M except for an unplayed record.
