Description
Here's a rare and unusual disc for the collector of early recordings.
Dated from around 1898, this is a test pressing of Berliner 4274 and measures approximately 8 1/2" or 21.5cm diameter and 1/4" or 6mm thick.
The song is "Abide with Me" by the Haydn Quartette. On this test pressing, the recorded surface is recessed below the outer rim
and this has protected the playing surface over the intervening century resulting in a clear reproduced sound.
This is only the second one of these discs I have seen listed on Ebay over the past years and the last one made over US$600.
I am starting the bidding at a much lower value to encourage interest.
It is the only Berliner Test pressing I have actually handled in over 40 years of collecting so they must be pretty rare.
