Behemoth is now deservedly considered one of the most important representatives of extreme music - their albums are at the top of the world sales charts, and concert tours on all continents and performances at the biggest festivals prove the power of the group. Over the years, the name Behemoth has become synonymous with ambition, persistence and a constant pursuit of perfection without looking back. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of the entire band and Nergal's vision, which transformed Behemoth into something much bigger than the black metal band they were at the beginning of their journey in 1991. Behemoth has become the embodiment of rebellion, individualism and a complete unwillingness to compromise.
Behemoth's new work, entitled "The Shit Ov God", is a symbol of ambition and strength. It shows a band that after 34 years releases its most incendiary and extreme album in its discography. Eight tracks that delve into the essence of humanity, divinity and the meaning of rebellion in a time where individuality is valued, but everyone clings to their so-called "saviors" - musically, politically or otherwise. Behemoth founder and frontman Nergal says of the album's title:
"We chose this provocative title deliberately, rejecting subtlety in favor of a direct and polarizing slogan. It's a rebellious dive into the depths, a bold search for the absolute even in the gutter."
Behemoth meticulously selected the audio-visual artists involved in the creation of the new album. The album was produced by Jens Bogren from Fascination Street Studios (Emperor, Enslaved, Kreator, Rotting Christ among others). Bogren emphasized the band's natural sound, not forgetting the kind of chaos and fury that is the band's essence. As usual with Behemoth, the visuals play just as important a role as the sound. The band turned to long-time collaborator Bartek Rogalewicz (BLACK.LODGE.IS.NOW) as well as Dark Sigil Workshop to create a beautiful, sinister and unique cover. This commitment to innovation has long been ingrained in the bands DNA. Every Behemoth album has its own distinct character, and no two in the discography are alike. From the very beginnings of Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) to The Shit Ov God, Behemoth have never repeated themselves, remaining both prolific and true to their ideals. This is no accident. This is an ambitious artistic discipline, where things must and will evolve. Nergal says of this evolution:
Its not about skill, its about soul. Its about expressing who you are its about thinking how can I expand the spectrum of death/black metal? And if we cant go further or faster, well go sideways. Thats exactly what Behemoth have done on their last few albums.
This mentality has often brought Behemoth into conflict with all sorts of orthodox and mediocrity advocates. Whether its the Catholic Church in Poland, who were surprised by the bands undying love for their dogmas and repeatedly tried to silence the band through the courts, or various black metal circles who werent happy with the band developing its own identity, Behemoth has taken their game to a whole new level, playing shows as far west as California to as far east as Tokyo and Sydney. Theyve performed at prestigious festivals including Hellfest and Wacken, and even more prestigious venues theyre the first extreme metal band to play at the Paris Philharmonic.
